The San Francisco 49ers won the NFC championship with a second-half comeback to beat the Detroit Lions at home, 34-31. San Francisco went into the locker room at halftime down 24-7 but scored 27 unanswered points to start the second half. RB Christian McCaffrey, who led the NFL in rushing yards during the regular season, ran for two TDs in that game. QB Brock Purdy threw for one touchdown with one interception. The 49ers earned the top seed in the NFC after finishing the season with a record of 12-5.
The team is relatively healthy headed into the Super Bowl. TE George Kittle did miss practice this week with a toe issue, but the team expects him to play. DE Drake Jackson has been ruled out, but DT Arik Armstead was cleared to play. The 49ers have not won a Super Bowl title since 1995, and they suffered a 31-20 loss to Kansas City in their last trip to the big game in 2020.
The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the AFC title with an underdog win on the road against the Baltimore Ravens in the conference title game, 17-10. QB Patrick Mahomes connected with TE Travis Kelce for one TD, and RB Isiah Pacheco ran in another one. The Kansas City defense, which was second-best in the league in both yards and points allowed per game during the regular season, also came up with three key turnovers in that game. Mahomes has yet to throw an interception this postseason, and the Chiefs offensive line didn’t surrender a single sack until the conference championship round.
WR Rashee Rice was limited in practice this week with an ankle injury, but the team expects him to play. G Joe Thuney has been ruled out for this game, with Nick Allegretti taking over at left guard. Kansas City won last year’s title after coming in as a slight underdog against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 as a three-point favorite, and it beat the 49ers in 2020 as a 1.5-point favorite.
