PredictIt is a prediction market focused exclusively on political and current events. Rather than betting on outcomes directly, users buy and sell shares in those outcomes, similar to how a stock market functions. It is operated for academic research purposes under a CFTC no-action letter, which sets it apart from commercial prediction market platforms. No sports markets are available.

Introduction to PredictIt
Initially launched in 2014 as an academic, real-money prediction market, PredictIt is one of the leading prediction markets for US politics.
PredictIt works much in the same way as the stock market, but instead of buying stocks in companies, you buy shares in the outcomes of events, like:
- “Will Donald Trump win the 2024 Republican nomination?”
- “Will the Democrats control the Senate after the 2026 midterms?”
- “Will the Federal Reserve raise rates in March 2025?”
Each possible outcome trades between $0.01 and $0.99 per share, depending on traders’ estimates of the odds.
- If the event happens, “Yes” shares pay out $1.
- If it doesn’t, “No” shares expire worthless.
So if you buy “Yes” shares at $0.60, you’ll earn $0.40 profit per share if you’re right.
What is the sports betting industry saying about PredictIt?
The sports betting industry has had very little to worry about with PredictIt. The platform focuses exclusively on the political landscape – a landscape entirely different from the sports betting world.
However, following CFTC approval, PredictIt is preparing to launch a new exchange that will expand beyond political markets. Although the details are currently unclear, there’s potential for sports coverage, much like Kalshi or Polymarket.
PredictIt website and app experience
The PredictIt website features a clean, simple, no-frills platform that is highly intuitive and easy for new users to navigate.
The mechanics of trading binary (Yes/No) event contracts are straightforward, whether you’re buying single or multiple contracts. Purchasing shares, tracking price movements, and either selling early or waiting for resolution is simple and accessible.
While some may find the design a bit “tired” or dated, from a usability standpoint it remains a strong example of a streamlined, uncomplicated product focused on function over aesthetics.
Did I like the app?
There is no mobile app available for users to download. However, PredictIt can be accessed in the browser on any smart device.
The mobile in-browser experience is similar to the desktop experience, but there’s a sense that the platform could be improved with a dedicated mobile app.
How to create an account on PredictIt
Creating a PredictIt account is quick and straightforward. Simply head over to PredictIt.org and hit “Sign Up” to open a new account.
New users can open an account via Facebook, Twitter (X), or email. To use the latter, simply enter:
- Email address
- Password
- Username
A username is automatically generated based on your email address, but this can be edited to your own preference.
Hit “Create Account” and you’ll instantly be able to access the site in full.
Proving personal info: What’s needed?
Before depositing at PredictIt, users must complete the persona details form, entering the following personal information:
- Full name
- Date of Birth
- Home Address
- SSN (for US players)
You must also check the box to confirm that you are a U.S. Person with a valid U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).
Finally, to verify your identity and comply with FinCEN and CFTC requirements, users must supply a Photo ID and/or a “selfie” photograph of themselves.
Making your first trade on PredictIt
After successfully creating an account, verifying your identity, and depositing at PredictIt, you’re ready to make your first trade on the platform.
Head to the “Markets” page to locate all active markets – at the time of writing, there are 120 markets to choose from. Browse the markers or sort by trade volume, price change, new arrivals, or expiring markets.

For example, I found the “Who will win the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination?” market, one of PredictIt’s most popular markets.
Gavin Newsom is trading at $0.35 to win, implying a roughly 35% chance of that outcome. If I also think Gavin Newsom will win, I can choose “Yes” to buy in. Alternatively, I could select “No” to secure the opposite. I would then confirm the number of shares that I’d like to purchase.
The shares will either remain “in-play” until after the event, or I could sell shares before the end of the event (to either limit losses or take an early profit). All winning shares after the event are worth $1.00 each. All losing shares will expire.
PredictIt Event Contracts
PredictIt operates on the concept of event contracts. Each possible answer to the question posed in a market is known as a “contract”. This is a key concept to understand as you navigate the platform. PredictIt uses two main contract types:
- Single-Contract Markets: The simplest and most common contract, allowing traders to sit on either side of a binary question (Yes/No).
- Multiple-Contract Markets: Similar to a Yes/No Contract, but with multiple options, such as the “Who will win the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination?” example above.
Markets that are time-sensitive and will be resolved by a specific date/time. For example, “What will President Trump’s RCP job approval rating be on Dec. 10?” is one of those time-sensitive markets.
How to place a contract on PredictIt
Placing a contract on PredictIt is a simple and intuitive process, with only two options available to traders in any given market: Yes or No.
Once you’ve found a market that you’d like to place a contract on, simply select “Yes” and enter the number of shares that you’d like to purchase.
Differences between PredictIt and competitors
PredictIt is one of the most tightly focused prediction markets available to US users, with the scope firmly on U.S. political events (elections, nominations, policy outcomes).
Prediction market competitors, such as Kalshi and Polymarket, offer similar political markets (albeit with less depth) alongside a range of other outcomes. These can include sports, entertainment, economics, etc.
Ultimately, if you’re specifically searching for a political prediction market, PredictIt is the go-to. But if you’re looking for alternative markets, it’s best to check out the competition.
Market selection at PredictIt
The market selection at PredictIt focuses exclusively on politics, with five main categories:
- Elections
- President
- Congress
- State/Local
- Global
Many markets are structured as binary (“Yes/No”) questions; however, some markets have multiple outcomes (e.g., election candidates).
While most prediction markets typically broadly cover many types of events (sports, economics, pop culture), PredictIt’s selection outside politics is nonexistent.
After CFTC approval, PredictIt is preparing to launch a new exchange that will expand beyond political markets. However, details are not currently known.
Tips and strategies for traders at PredictIt
Success on PredictIt comes from timing, information, and discipline.
Follow political news closely and look for market overreactions, buying low when others panic or selling high after hype can yield steady gains. Diversify across several markets to balance risk and avoid relying on one outcome.
Smart traders also take profits early when prices swing in their favour, rather than waiting for final results. Since fees can chip away at returns, focus on efficient trades, solid research, and managing risk rather than chasing quick wins.
PredictIt customer support
Customer service at PredictIt is limited, with users able to contact the support team only via an email form embedded on the “Help and Support” page. Simply enter a subject, message, and choose whether to upload supporting file(s) to submit.
Alternatively, users can use the support resources, including FAQs and how-to videos.
Security and safety
The PredictIt platform is managed by Victoria University of Wellington under U.S. regulatory supervision.
Although it boasts greater legitimacy than most informal prediction markets, the site operates under a research exemption, offering fewer user protections than conventional gambling or financial trading platforms.
Standard encryption and verified payment methods are used to safeguard user data and transactions.
My verdict on PredictIt
If you’re searching for a real-money prediction market that exclusively focuses on political markets, it doesn’t get much better than PredictIt.
The platform is easy to use, packed full of markets, and offers depth that competing prediction markets simply cannot match. However, those looking for markets outside politics may find a broader real-money prediction platform to fulfill their needs.
Ultimately, PredictIt is excellent for deep diving into US politics. But those looking to trade sports, economics, and entertainment should check out other platforms like Kalshi or Polymarket, which might be a better fit.
PredictIt FAQs
Yes, as a platform technically used for academic research, PredictIt operates legally under a “no-action” letter from the CFTC.
Yes, users can earn real profits when their predictions are correct. However, fees (10% on profits) and market limits ($3,500 per contact) restrict the amount that can be claimed.
There is no mobile app available for iOS or Android users; however, the PredictIt.org website is fully responsive, allowing access in the browser from any smart device.
