Alabama continued to explore sports betting legalization in 2026, but progress stalled again. Sen. Merika Coleman introduced SB 257 on Feb. 3, which would have let voters decide on a state lottery, online sports betting, casinos, and a gaming compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. The bill needed three-fifths approval in both chambers to reach a referendum, and it never left committee. The legislature adjourned sine die on April 9 without a floor vote on SB 257 or a competing House lottery-only bill.
Supporters argued that Alabama is losing tax revenue to neighboring states where sports betting is already legal. In contrast, others viewed the proposal as a way to bring existing gambling activity under state regulation. Despite renewed interest, the effort struggled to gain enough support in the legislature and ultimately stalled before reaching a vote.
For now, sports betting remains illegal in Alabama, and there are no active bills that appear likely to change that in the near term. Even so, the issue is far from settled.
Alabama is one of the few remaining states without an online lottery or legal online sports betting sites, and many lawmakers expect the conversation to continue in future legislative sessions. While legalization does not appear imminent, supporters are likely to return with new proposals in 2027, keeping Alabama in the broader national trend toward expanded gaming and sports wagering.
When will online sports betting launch in Alabama?
There is currently no timeline for online sports betting in Alabama. Lawmakers considered another gambling expansion proposal in 2026 that included sports betting, but the effort stalled in the legislature, leaving the state without legal wagering.

2026: Lawmakers introduced a new gambling expansion bill that included sports betting, a lottery, and casino gaming, but the proposal failed to advance. Sports betting remains illegal in Alabama.
2025: Discussions around sports betting continued following the failure of the 2024 gambling package, but no major legislation gained traction. Alabama remained one of the few states without legal sports betting or a state lottery.
2024: Alabama lawmakers stated their intention to introduce a gambling bill at the start of the legislative session, covering a lottery, casino gambling, and online sports betting. Legislation then quickly cleared the House on Feb. 15, with two bills, House Bill 151 and House Bill 152, receiving approval. HB 151 was the constitutional amendment, and HB 152 was the legislation that would create a gaming commission and allow online sports betting, seven casinos, and a lottery.
Both HB 151 and HB 152 passed through the Alabama Senate as well, but with sports betting and iGaming stripped out. The House rejected those changes, though, and appointed a conference committee to the bills. Sen. Albritton told LSR the conference committee could be established on April 16, but that “after that, your guess is as good as mine” regarding the House and Senate reaching an agreement. Ultimately, the conference committee proposal failed in the Senate by one vote after passing in the House. Meanwhile, Eugene Bert Neff Jr., was sentenced to eight months in prison, according to court records, for his role in an NCAA betting scandal.
2023: Lawmakers in Alabama expected multiple gaming bills, including online sports betting, to be introduced during the state’s legislative session. There was substantial appetite among lawmakers in the state to legalize sports betting, and the effort would reportedly have the backing of Gov. Kay Ivey. At the Pro-Growth Policy Conference held by Alabama Democrats, lawmakers explored possible options to legalize sports betting. Amid all this, Underdog Fantasy announced that it will release peer-to-peer pick’em games in Alabama.
2022: SB 293 and SB 294 were introduced. SB 293 proposed an amendment to the Alabama Constitution that would have established a state lottery and allowed sports betting and casino-style games. The bill would also have limited sports betting to in-person wagers at a registered casino or mobile wagers through a platform provided by a registered casino. SB 294 would have implemented the amendment proposed by SB 293. Both bills died on the Senate floor. Another bill, HB 405, was introduced to legalize sports betting only in Jefferson County. Jefferson County contains the state’s largest city and capital, Birmingham. The bill did not make it past a first reading.
2021: A comprehensive package aimed largely at establishing a state lottery stalled at the end of the legislative session. The package passed the Senate, but failed to see the House floor for a vote. Along with establishing a state lottery, the package would have aimed to turn state racetracks into casinos, complete with retail and mobile sports betting.
2020: HB 336 stalled in committee. The bill aimed to legalize mobile sports betting, with certain retail outlets licensed to accept bets. Sports betting revenue would have been subject to a 10% tax rate.
2019: HB 315, another sports betting bill, failed in committee. But Alabamians got access to daily fantasy sports in 2019 after a bill legalized the games. The state’s attorney general deemed the games illegal in 2016.
