Some excluded tribes argued against the process and sought legal action. How does Arizona sports betting compare to Nevada?

June 26, 2026: Sporttrade’s exit becomes official as its Arizona shutdown completes, freeing the Quechan Tribe’s license and triggering the state’s new application window.
May 27, 2026 – The Arizona Department of Gaming announced a new application period for event wagering licenses after several sportsbook operators exited the market. The move could bring new brands to Arizona and increase competition among sportsbooks.
History of Arizona sports betting
The 2021 debut of legal sports betting in Arizona capped off legislative wrangling that stretched back to 2019. Lawmakers proposed multiple bills during each legislative session but found themselves stymied or turned back for one reason or another.
One of the biggest sticking points was the legality of allowing Arizona’s many tribes to offer services outside of tribal lands, as one proposal suggested allowing them to place kiosks in off-reservation areas. Ultimately, the work paid off, and Arizona became one of the fastest states to book more than $1 billion in wagers in US history.

2026: The Arizona Department of Gaming announces it will open a new application window for event wagering licenses from June 26 to July 10. With several sportsbook operators having exited the market in recent years, up to six licenses have become available for new applicants.
2025: Arizona lawmakers continue to monitor the state’s growing sports betting industry as sportsbooks generate more than $700 million in revenue during the year. The market remains one of the largest in the country, with major operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365, and Fanatics competing for customers.
2024: The Arizona Department of Gaming announces it will reopen the sports betting license application process on Feb. 16. One license will be in a deal with a tribe, and at least one other will be for a sports franchise.
Bet365 and Fanatics Sportsbook go live in Arizona in April, while Unibet, SaharaBets, Betway, and SuperBook all exit.

It gains momentum quickly, though, as Ducey negotiates new gambling compacts with state tribes to govern their casinos. Ducey signed the bill into law in April 2021. Sportsbooks launch on Sept. 9, 2021. In its first four months of legal betting, Arizona reports roughly $1.75 billion in wagers, including nearly a half-billion in December alone.
2020: Sen. Sonny Borrelli and Rep. Steve Pierce reintroduce their bills as SB1525 and HB2813. Once again, the Senate bill doesn’t move past its second reading. Meanwhile, the House bill passes through two major committees, but it never receives a vote on the House floor.
