Alabama Sports Betting: Legal AL Sportsbooks & Legislation Updates
Alabama sports betting is illegal despite multiple efforts to change that over the past few years.
Alabama has no commercial casinos and just three tribal casinos operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Alabama is also one of the few states in the US without a lottery.

What’s happening in Alabama sports betting right now?
Alabama continued to explore sports betting legalization in 2026, but progress stalled again. Sen. Merika Coleman introduced SB 257 on Feb. 3, which would have let voters decide on a state lottery, online sports betting, casinos, and a gaming compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. The bill needed three-fifths approval in both chambers to reach a referendum, and it never left committee. The legislature adjourned sine die on April 9 without a floor vote on SB 257 or a competing House lottery-only bill.
Supporters argued that Alabama is losing tax revenue to neighboring states where sports betting is already legal. In contrast, others viewed the proposal as a way to bring existing gambling activity under state regulation. Despite renewed interest, the effort struggled to gain enough support in the legislature and ultimately stalled before reaching a vote.
For now, sports betting remains illegal in Alabama, and there are no active bills that appear likely to change that in the near term. Even so, the issue is far from settled.
Alabama is one of the few remaining states without an online lottery or legal online sports betting sites, and many lawmakers expect the conversation to continue in future legislative sessions. While legalization does not appear imminent, supporters are likely to return with new proposals in 2027, keeping Alabama in the broader national trend toward expanded gaming and sports wagering.
When will online sports betting launch in Alabama?
No launch date is on the horizon for online sports betting in Alabama. The 2026 session’s only gambling-related bill, Senate Bill 257, never received a committee hearing and ended when the legislature adjourned sine die on April 9. Any path to legal sports betting in Alabama requires a constitutional amendment, which needs three-fifths approval in both chambers before it can reach voters. That threshold has blocked every attempt to date.
A gubernatorial election in November 2026 could reshape the political landscape heading into the 2027 session, but there’s no guarantee a new proposal will gain traction. Even if legislation passes, a launch would still take several months for regulators to establish licensing rules and approve operators.
Sportsbook apps that could launch in Alabama
If Alabama were to legalize online sports betting, the state would likely attract several major sportsbook operators already live across much of the country and have a track record of launching quickly in new markets. Our top picks are:
BetMGM Sportsbook
BetMGM is one of the top sportsbook apps in the US, currently live in 24 states. It’s known for its deep menu of sports and betting options, and its standout feature, Edit My Bet, lets you add, remove, or swap selections on an active bet slip. The app is rated 4.8 on iOS and 4.0 on Android.
FanDuel Sportsbook
FanDuel is widely considered the most beginner-friendly sportsbook app on the market. It’s live in 24 states and offers a clean, easy-to-navigate interface along with competitive odds and a strong same-game parlay builder. FanDuel already has brand presence in Alabama through its DFS platform. The app is rated 4.8 on iOS and 4.4 on Android.
Fanatics Sportsbook
Fanatics Sportsbook is the betting arm of the well-known sports apparel company and is currently available in 24 states plus D.C. It stands out for its FanCash rewards program, which lets you earn rewards on every wager and redeem them for more bets or merchandise from the Fanatics Store. The app is rated 4.8 on iOS and 4.7 on Android.
DraftKings Sportsbook
DraftKings is one of the most recognized names in US sports betting and is live in 28 states. The app is known for its polished dark-mode design, strong live-betting platform, and betting pools that let you compete alongside friends. Like FanDuel, DraftKings already has a footprint in Alabama through its daily fantasy sports product. The app is rated 4.8 on both iOS and Android.
bet365 Sportsbook
bet365 is one of the world’s largest sportsbooks and is currently available in 18 US states, with more on the way. The app is especially popular for its daily odds boosts, live-betting options, and in-app event streaming. It’s also frequently praised for responsive customer service. The app is rated 4.8 on iOS and 4.6 on Android.
Legal betting options in Alabama
No legal sportsbook websites accept bets from anyone within the state of Alabama.
Any other websites that accept sports bets from someone in Alabama are not a legal option within the United States. Various familiar sportsbooks operate offshore, meaning they don’t hold a license from any US jurisdiction to legally accept bets from residents.
These websites offer no consumer protection whatsoever. They are under no obligation to provide resolutions should disputes arise, and companies can disappear without returning player deposits. The only safe and protected way to bet on sports in the United States is with a licensed sportsbook.
DFS Pick’Em
Alabama legalized and regulated daily fantasy sports in 2019, allowing licensed operators to offer fantasy contests, including pick’em-style DFS games. However, some operators may offer modified contest formats to comply with state regulations.
Popular DFS pick’em sites available in Alabama include Betr Picks, Sleeper, and DraftKings Pick6, among others. Availability and contest formats can change, so players should check each platform for current offerings in the state.
Sleeper
Sleeper is an all-in-one sports app that offers daily fantasy contests, season-long fantasy leagues, and live score tracking. Alabama users can access Sleeper Daily Drafts, which are weekly snake drafts with entry fees starting at $1. Sleeper Picks are not currently available in the state. Sports covered include NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, soccer, and esports.
In early 2026, Sleeper also rolled out Team Picks, a prediction market feature that lets users trade on game outcomes like moneylines and spreads.

Betr Picks
Betr Picks is a pick’em DFS app built for casual fans who want a straightforward way to play. You predict whether players will go over or under their projected stats across NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, UFC, golf, and soccer. Entries can include two to eight picks, with payouts ranging from 3x to 100x.
The app’s Dynamic Play feature lets you still win even if you miss a pick or two, which makes it especially beginner-friendly. Betr Picks is mobile-only and available on both iOS and Android.

ParlayPlay
ParlayPlay is a daily fantasy app centered on parlay-style pick’em contests. You combine two to nine higher/lower player stat predictions into a single entry, with the option to play “All In” (every pick must hit) or “Insured” (you can still win if one pick misses). Sports covered include NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, MLS, golf, tennis, and MMA. ParlayPlay is available in Alabama.
The app also offers a Free2Play mode with no entry fee, which is a great way to try the platform before committing real money.

DraftKings Pick6
DraftKings Pick6 is a peer-to-peer pick’em app where you select two to six player prop over/unders and get automatically entered into contests against other users. Since you’re competing against the field and not the house, even entries that miss a pick or two can still win prizes. Pick6 covers NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, UFC, PGA Tour, NASCAR, and esports.
The app runs separately from the main DraftKings sportsbook. If you already have a DraftKings account, your funds carry over.

DraftKings DFS
DraftKings DFS is the original daily fantasy sports product from one of the biggest names in the industry. You draft a full lineup of real athletes under a $50,000 salary cap and earn points based on their actual in-game stats. Contest formats include large guaranteed prize pools, head-to-head matchups, and beginner-friendly 50/50 contests. DraftKings DFS covers NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA Tour, and more.

Horse Racing/Parimutuels
Alabama permits parimutuel wagering on horse racing, although the state currently has no live horse racing tracks. Instead, bettors can wager on races held outside Alabama through simulcast racing facilities.
Parimutuel betting is legal in Alabama, meaning all wagers are pooled together, and payouts are determined by how much money is wagered on each horse rather than by fixed odds. State law also allows simulcast wagering on out-of-state races, and some racing venues offer historical horse racing (HHR) machines that use the results of previously run races to determine outcomes.
Alabama residents can also access certain advance-deposit wagering (ADW) platforms that accept horse racing bets online. Availability varies by operator, so bettors should verify whether a platform is available in the state before registering.
Therefore, sites like TwinSpires are legally accessible in Alabama. However, FanDuel Racing (formerly TVG) is not available in the state.
Prediction Markets in Alabama
Prediction markets are available to Alabama residents through federally regulated platforms that allow users to trade contracts based on the outcome of future events. These markets operate differently from traditional sportsbooks, offering event-based trading rather than fixed-odds wagering on sports and other outcomes.
Here’s our roundup of the best prediction market platforms that Alabama residents can actually use right now to trade on sports and more.
Kalshi
Kalshi is one of the most established CFTC-regulated prediction market platforms in the country and stands out for offering sports contracts nationwide. You can trade on NFL, NBA, MLB, and college sports outcomes. Beyond sports, Kalshi covers economics, politics, weather, climate, and culture as well.
Trading fees range from 0.07% to 1.75%, making it one of the most affordable platforms in the space. You can sell your positions before an event resolves, giving you flexibility to lock in a profit or cut a loss early. For Alabama users looking for the widest range of markets in one place, Kalshi is a strong pick.
FanDuel Predicts
FanDuel Predicts is FanDuel’s federally regulated prediction market platform. Instead of placing traditional bets, you trade event contracts by buying “Yes” or “No” positions on real-world outcomes. Since Alabama doesn’t have FanDuel Sportsbook, sports contracts are fully available here. This covers NFL, NBA, NHL, college football, and college basketball, alongside markets on politics, crypto, finance, and culture.
The platform runs through a standalone mobile app and carries a 2% transaction fee per contract. For Alabama fans who want to trade on Crimson Tide and Auburn outcomes, this is one of the more polished options available.
Polymarket
Polymarket is a blockchain-based prediction market that launched its regulated US platform in December 2025. All contracts are structured as simple YES/NO trades priced between $0.00 and $1.00. If your prediction is correct, each share pays out $1.00. Markets cover sports, politics, finance, crypto, geopolitics, tech, and culture. For Alabama users comfortable with a crypto-based interface, Polymarket offers some of the deepest market liquidity available.
Taker fees generally fall in the 4–7% range, while maker orders are fee-free. You can fund your account with crypto, a debit card, PayPal, or a bank transfer.
OG
OG is Crypto.com’s standalone prediction market platform, launched in February 2026. It covers sports, politics, financials, crypto, climate, and culture. Sports contracts may vary by state, but Alabama users generally have access to the full lineup. The platform stands out with features like parlay-style entries, margin trading, and social leaderboards.
OG charges a flat 2% fee per contract. The app accepts a wide range of payment methods, including debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
ProphetX
ProphetX is a peer-to-peer sports exchange that focuses exclusively on sports. Instead of betting against the house, you trade directly with other users. ProphetX covers NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, and soccer. On this CFTC-licensed platform, odds are driven by market demand rather than fixed bookmaker lines. Market types include moneylines, spreads, totals, player props, and futures.
A standout feature is its back-and-lay betting, which lets you bet on an outcome or bet against it. The platform charges a commission on net winnings, i.e., typically 1–3%.
Most popular sports to bet on in Alabama
Should legal Alabama sports betting ever happen, there would be no shortage of sports betting enthusiasts.
The one critical aspect of sports betting for residents of Alabama to keep in mind is whether legislation will allow betting on in-state college athletics.
Alabama has no professional sports teams, but plenty of big schools boast the same sort of frenzied fanbases as some of the biggest pro teams.
The top two programs in the state are the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers, both of which have strong NCAA football and basketball programs. The Crimson Tide football team, in particular, is likely the most popular in the state regardless of sport and has a strong nationwide following as one of the top teams in college football over the past 15 years.
Since the Alabama and Auburn football teams are followed like religion, college football betting would certainly be popular in Alabama.
As for pro teams, allegiances in Alabama are likely geographic. The Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, and New Orleans Saints are all based in cities close to the Alabama border and would have strong ties to NFL fans in the state. The New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Hawks, and Memphis Grizzlies are the three closest NBA teams, and baseball fans in Alabama have the nearby Atlanta Braves as the closest MLB option.
Alabama sports betting 2026 timeline
September – October
- No new legislative action has been taken. Sports betting remains illegal in Alabama. So, the earliest any new bill could be considered is the 2027 session, which convenes in January.
August
- The Sports Betting Alliance named Alabama as a state where it expects a renewed legalisation push in 2027, with sports wagering likely to be discussed alongside a state lottery proposal.
- A state lawmaker publicly indicated readiness for legal sports betting to be addressed again in the next legislative session.
June – July
- Prediction market platforms operating under federal CFTC licences continued to gain traction in Alabama, offering residents a legal avenue for sports-related trading in the absence of state-regulated sportsbooks.
- An Alabama sports betting scandal made headlines in mid-July, adding further complexity to an already difficult political environment for legalisation advocates.
May
- No late-session developments materialised. Alabama remained without a legal sports betting framework. There were no signs of a special session or supplemental legislation.
April
- The legislature adjourned sine die on April 9 without a floor vote on SB 257 or any competing gambling bill. Sports betting remained illegal in Alabama, with no active legislation left on the table.
March
- SB 257 failed to receive a committee hearing before the legislative session ended on March 27, marking the third consecutive session in which gambling expansion proposals ended without advancing past committee. The conversation around sports betting began shifting toward campaign politics ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election.
February
- Sen. Coleman formally introduced Senate Bill 257 on Feb. 3, proposing a constitutional amendment to authorise a state lottery, in-person casino gambling, and both online and retail sports betting. Six Democratic senators co-sponsored the bill.
- SB 257 was assigned to the Senate Tourism Committee but did not receive a hearing. Republican leadership reiterated the bill lacked the support needed to advance, effectively ruling out sports betting legislation for the session.
January
- The Alabama Legislature gavelled in its 2026 session. Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger signalled that gambling legislation was unlikely to come up this year, citing a lack of support within the chamber.
- Sen. Merika Coleman (D-19) announced plans to introduce a constitutional amendment bill that would allow voters to decide on gambling expansion, including sports betting.
