Cook signs 1-year deal with Jets

On Tuesday, news broke that Cook had agreed to a one-year deal with the Jets. The Minnesota Vikings released Cook in June after the club failed to find a trading partner, and speculation has been persistent ever since about where he would land.

Cook visited the Jets last month, and the stars further aligned as Aaron Rodgers agreed to restructure his contract to free up some money. The deal is reportedly for one year and up to $8.6 million. Last season, Cook racked up 1,468 combined yards and 10 total touchdowns.

How Cook signing has impacted New York Jets odds

Prior to the signing of Cook, the Jets were among the top 10 teams in Super Bowl odds. Here’s where the team’s odds stand in some key futures markets following the news.

As of this writing, the best odds for the Jets to win the Super Bowl are +1800 at FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook. The odds are +1600 at Caesars Sportsbook and +1700 at BetRivers Sportsbook

The Jets have mostly settled into the seventh position on the board. The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs remain the Super Bowl favorite, followed by the team they defeated to win the title, the Philadelphia Eagles.

As far as odds to win the AFC, the best available number prior to the Cook signing was +1000, and that still holds true. The odds at most sportsbooks have the Jets fourth, behind the Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals

In the race for the AFC East, the Bills are favorites to take the crown for the fourth consecutive season. The Jets have edged ahead of the Miami Dolphins to be second in odds to take the division, with the New England Patriots bringing up the rear.

Add it all up, and the betting odds have the Jets in the mix for a wild card spot with a chance to make the division chase interesting. New York is riding the longest current postseason drought in the NFL, last reaching the playoffs following the 2010 season.

What does this mean for the Jets offense?

Last season, the Jets were in the bottom eight of the league in offensive yards per game and fourth-worst in average points per game. After showing some promise in the early part of the season, the club hit the skids down the stretch, dropping its last six to finish at 7-10 and in last place in the AFC East.

Since the offseason trade for Rodgers, expectations have soared, and they’ll likely rise even further now that the team has brought Cook into the fold. Here are the current Jets odds in other NFL futures:

Rookie Breece Hall led the team in rushing a season ago, despite having his campaign cut short due to an ACL injury. He’s on the comeback trail, setting up the potential for a solid one-two punch with Cook.

Garrett Wilson flashed his potential last season in spite of New York’s struggles, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The team has also upgraded the receiver room, with additions that include Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb.

In the MVP chase, Rodgers is currently one of the top eight choices on the board at most legal sportsbooks. He’s a four-time winner of the award, most recently winning back-to-back honors in 2020 and 2021.

As for Cook, current betting odds have tempered expectations for now, but we could see an additional spike in interest as the dust begins to settle around his signing.

We’ll have to wait and see how the individual pieces of the puzzle perform, but it’s safe to say that things are finally looking up at MetLife Stadium. The Jets open in Week 1 with a must-see matchup versus the Bills on Monday Night Football.
