2024 NFL MVP favorites

Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills

MVP odds: Josh Allen -450 on DraftKings

Allen has held the top spot on the MVP odds board since a week 11 win over the Kansas City Chiefs that saw him finish the game for 315 combined yards and two total TDs. Allen is pulling away from the top contenders on the odds board as Buffalo is 11-3 on the season with a 6-0 home record.

Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore Ravens

MVP odds: Lamar Jackson +320 on DraftKings

Jackson ran away with the MVP last season, emerging as the clear consensus late in the year. Baltimore got off to a rocky start this season, with back-to-back losses in its first two games, but the team has since rebounded. Jackson’s MVP odds continued to climb throughout that streak. However, Jackson fell to No. 2 following a week 11 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Saquon Barkley, RB, Philadelphia Eagles

MVP odds: Saquon Barkley +8000 on DraftKings

It’s not often the NFL MVP odds board has a running back this high. Barkley is putting up eye-opening numbers this season with 1,688 rush yards (a team single-season record). The NFL all-time mark still belongs to Eric Dickerson (2,105). It also helps that Barkley’s Birds have won 10 straight and are 12-2 overall.

Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions

MVP odds: Jared Goff +15000 on DraftKings

Goff has led the Lions to a 12-2 record and the NFC North lead. As his team’s fortunes have continued to improve, so too have Goff’s MVP odds. He threw for 494 yards and five TDs in a loss to the Bills, keeping him in the top four in MVP odds.

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs

MVP odds: Patrick Mahomes +50000 on DraftKings

Mahomes once again opened as the favorite following another Super Bowl win in which he was the game’s MVP. Kansas City is 13-1, with the lone loss coming against the Buffalo Bills. Mahomes finished with two interceptions and three passing TDs in the game. Only six players have won the NFL MVP award three or more times since its inception.

Long shots to win the 2024 NFL MVP

The last non-QB winner of the NFL MVP award was Adrian Peterson in 2012. Last season, 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey was among the potential candidates late in the season. At the initial release of 2024 NFL MVP betting odds, McCaffrey was at Christian McCaffrey +50000 on Bet365. Also on the odds board are 49ers QB Brock Purdy Brock Purdy +75000 and Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Dak Prescott +30000.

Among the top non-QB long shots in the MVP race this year are Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill Tyreek Hill +50000 on DraftKings and Vikings WR Justin Jefferson Justin Jefferson +50000.

NFL MVP line moves

When odds opened for the 2024-25 NFL MVP race, the clear leaders were Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow. That trifecta was much the same headed into the 2023 season, before Lamar Jackson emerged as the consensus choice late in the year. This year, it’s been C.J. Stroud who jumped up the odds board on the strength of a strong rookie season last year, plus some key offseason additions to help the Texans out offensively. Jordan Love saw some significant movement ahead of Week 1 but fell from the favorites after suffering a knee injury in the last few seconds of a losing effort.

NFL MVP FAQ

What is the official name of the MVP award?

The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award has been an annual accolade since 1957. While there are other honors handed out at the conclusion of the season, this is the only MVP award that’s officially sanctioned by the NFL.

How is the NFL MVP award decided?

A panel of 50 sportswriters votes on the NFL MVP at the conclusion of the regular season. The writers make a single selection each, with each vote equaling one point. The player with the most votes/points wins the award.

Has there ever been a unanimous NFL MVP?

Yes, this has happened twice. Tom Brady received 50 out of 50 votes while winning his second MVP award with the New England Patriots in 2010. Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens was a unanimous pick in 2019 and came one vote short of being the unanimous pick when he won the award again in 2023.

How many players have won multiple NFL MVP awards?

Eleven NFL players have been multiple-time MVPs. Peyton Manning has won the most with five, followed by Aaron Rodgers with four. Jim Brown is among the four players who have won three each, and he is also the only non-QB to win multiple times. Lamar Jackson is the most recent player to join the list, winning his second MVP for the 2023 season.

Who was the last player to win consecutive NFL MVP awards?

Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and 2021. Prior to Rodgers, the last player to turn the trick was Peyton Manning in 2008-09. In the history of the award, just five players have won in consecutive years.
