The New York Jets (2-3) are coming off a coaching shakeup for this Monday night matchup with the Buffalo Bills (3-2) in an AFC East clash to cap the week. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with ESPN on the broadcast.
The Bills are slight favorites in NFL Week 6 odds after opening as slight underdogs when the point spread first became available this offseason. The total has dropped to 40.5 points at some books.
Buffalo has lost consecutive games after a hot start and was playing without six starters in a narrow Week 5 loss in Houston. It’s possible the Bills get top cornerback Taron Johnson (arm) back from a multi-week absence, but leading receiver Khalil Shakir (ankle) appears to be on the wrong side of questionable.
The Jets promoted defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to interim head coach and relegated offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, giving passing game coordinator Todd Downing play-calling duties going forward. The Jets could still be without tackle Morgan Moses (knee) and linebacker C.J. Mosley (toe). Check below for more info about some potential prop bets for this Monday Night Football game. Player props for Bills vs. Jets
How Josh Allen could get over 1.5 passing touchdowns
It was only a few weeks ago that Josh Allen became the early MVP favorite with seven passing touchdowns and a 133.7 passer rating during a 3-0 start. Allen has dipped to a 65.0 passer rating with just one touchdown in consecutive losses, and he faces another tough defense in this matchup. However, the dual-threat quarterback has a history of making plays when his team has few other options.
The Jets’ run defense remains elite and that might force the Bills to throw when they get into the red zone. The Buffalo Bills have converted two-thirds of red zone possessions into touchdowns, which is good for seventh-best in the NFL. Allen has not thrown an interception so far, and his receivers are potential big-play threats, along with talented second-year tight end Dalton Kincaid. He’s averaged 1.82 touchdown passes per game against the AFC East throughout his career and 2.25 touchdown passes in night games.
How Josh Allen could get under 1.5 passing touchdowns
The New York Jets have given Allen trouble — he’s thrown 11 interceptions with just 12 touchdowns in 11 career meetings. Now he has to prepare for new wrinkles with a new coach in charge. Also, the Jets’ elite cornerback duo of Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed are both healthier than they were early in the season.
The Jets’ defense has only allowed seven touchdowns through five games and ranks second in opponent passing yards per game (136.6), with the second-highest sack rate (11.4%) this season. The Bills have been committed to the run since offensive coordinator Joe Brady took over last season, and Allen might not have enough weapons to threaten this Jets secondary if Shakir misses another game with his ankle injury.
How Breece Hall could get over 52.5 rushing yards
After topping this number in each of his first three starts this season, Hall has had just 27 rushing yards at 1.4 yards per carry in consecutive losses to the Broncos and Vikings. His snap share has remained around 70% in that span, and new play-caller Todd Downing could decide to ramp up his workload at the expense of rookie Braelon Allen.
The Bills are coughing up a league-high 5.2 yards per carry and the eighth-most rushing yards per game (144) this season. Hall shredded the Bills for 127 rushing yards on just 10 carries last September when he was still working his way back from an ACL surgery. He was stymied in Buffalo in November, but the Bills were far healthier on defense then. Run-stopping tackle Ed Oliver (hamstring) continues to miss practice, and Jets offensive tackle Morgan Moses (knee) is practicing in a limited fashion.
How Breece Hall could miss 52.5 rushing yards
There are plenty of unknowns with a passing-game coordinator taking over as play-caller, and it’s possible Todd Downing continues to let Aaron Rodgers drop back at one of the highest frequencies in football. The Jets rank third in pass-play rate (64.2%) and are dead last in rushing yards per game (80.4), which could fall on the personnel as much as the demoted offensive coordinator.
Hall leads all running backs in route participation and target share, while Allen is taking on more of a traditional tailback role, so it’s possible Hall’s spike in production comes through the air. Buffalo will be looking to right the ship and hang on to the division lead, so it’s possible the Bills defensive front will come to play in this matchup.
