Canada’s 2026 FIFA World Cup was a breakthrough by any measure. Playing as co-hosts, Les Rouges earned their first-ever World Cup point, first win and first knockout-round victory, highlighted by a 6-0 rout of Qatar in Vancouver and a stoppage-time winner against South Africa. The run ended on July 4 in Houston, where Morocco won 3-0 in the Round of 16.

Canada at the 2026 World Cup
Canada opened Group B in front of a home crowd at BMO Field in Toronto, and Cyle Larin’s 78th-minute goal earned a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, the first World Cup point in program history. Six days later in Vancouver came the night Canadian fans had waited decades for: Jonathan David scored a hat trick, the first by a host-nation player since Geoff Hurst in 1966, as Canada crushed Qatar 6-0 for its first World Cup win. The margin was the largest ever by a CONCACAF team at a World Cup.
A 2-1 loss to Switzerland in the group finale dropped Canada to second place with four points, but that was still good enough to advance. In the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium, Stephen Eustáquio struck in the second minute of stoppage time to beat South Africa 1-0 and send Canada to the last 16 for the first time.

Morocco ends the ride
Canada carried the better of the first half against Morocco, but it couldn’t turn pressure into goals, and it was playing without Alphonso Davies and Ismaël Koné. Four minutes after halftime, a defensive mistake led to a set-piece goal from Azzedine Ounahi, and the Atlas Lions pulled away from there, with Ounahi adding a second and Soufiane Rahimi also scoring. Morocco, which had already knocked out the Netherlands, rolled on to the quarterfinals.
Marsch locked in through 2030
Canada Soccer signed Marsch to a four-year extension in late May, before the tournament began. Since taking over in 2024, the American coach has led Canada to a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Copa América, a program-best FIFA ranking and now its deepest World Cup run.
How Canada qualifies for the 2030 World Cup
Co-hosting guaranteed Canada a place in 2026, but there’s no free pass this time. CONCACAF has announced six direct berths for 2030 plus one intercontinental playoff spot, and Canada will compete for them alongside the United States and Mexico.
- First round (from September 2027): Nations ranked 14th through 35th in the region play two-legged ties, with 11 winners moving on. Canada’s ranking should exempt it from this stage.
- Second round (October 2027 to March 2028): Twenty-four teams are split into six groups of four, and the top two from each advance.
- Final round (June 2028 to October 2029): The remaining 12 teams play in three groups of four. Group winners and runners-up qualify directly for 2030.
- Playoff path: The two best third-place teams meet in November 2029, and the winner heads to FIFA’s intercontinental playoff.

Where the World Cup goes next
After 2026’s three-nation event in North America, the next two hosts are already locked in.
- 2030: Morocco joins European neighbors Spain and Portugal as primary co-hosts. South America gets three celebration games, one apiece in Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Asunción, to honor the centenary of the inaugural 1930 tournament. Matches are slated for June and July.
- 2034: FIFA handed the tournament to Saudi Arabia alone in December 2024. Exact dates remain unannounced.
The 2038 host has not been decided.
Canada World Cup history
Before 2026, Canada’s World Cup résumé was short. The men’s team qualified in 1986 and lost all three group games without scoring, then returned in 2022 and lost all three again, with Alphonso Davies scoring the program’s first World Cup goal against Croatia. In a single summer, Canada went from zero points in six matches to a group-stage win, a knockout victory and a place among the final 16.

No CONCACAF nation has ever reached a World Cup final, and the region’s best finish remains the United States’ third place in 1930. Only eight countries have won the trophy: Uruguay, Italy, West Germany/Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina, France and Spain. The lone year without a final match was 1950, when a round-robin group decided the title and Uruguay finished ahead of Brazil.
