La Celeste have elite players in every department, from José Giménez and Ronald Araujo on defense to Darwin Núñez on attack. They are among the favorites to lift the trophy, but they will have their work cut out in Group C.

The US squad is young, energetic, and packed full of quality players. Panama has been on an upward curve in recent years too, so Uruguay could face fierce competition from its rivals. We go over the Copa America odds, strengths, and weaknesses of the teams competing in Group C below.

Copa America 2024 Group C

Uruguay and the US are the clear favorites to reach the knockout stage in Copa America betting. Current soccer odds expect them to battle for supremacy in Group C, whereas Panama and Bolivia are huge underdogs.

Uruguay

Uruguay is the joint-most successful team in Copa America history. La Celeste have won this tournament 15 times in the past, and they have also finished as the runners-up on six occasions. However, their last triumph came in 2011, so the players will be looking to end a 13-year trophy drought this summer.

The Uruguayan squad looks formidable. José Giménez and Ronald Araujo are superb defenders, and Manuel Ugarte provides a strong screen for the defense. Federico Valverde is a world-class midfielder, and Darwin Núñez is a dangerous striker. Veteran forward Luis Suárez also offers a significant goal threat if he makes the squad.

Uruguay is currently second in the South American qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup after winning its last three games. La Celeste beat Brazil 2-0, Argentina 2-0, and Bolivia 3-0. That is a seriously impressive run of results, as Argentina and Brazil are two of the world’s best teams, so it is easy to see why Uruguay is the favorite to win Group C. However, it lacks squad depth, so a couple of injuries could detail its campaign.

United States

The USMNT is the second-favorite to win Group C. Manager Gregg Berhalter cannot call upon as many world-class players as Uruguayan boss Marcelo Bielsa, but the US has a deeper squad.

The sportsbooks expect this team to reach the quarterfinals, with odds of on the US qualifying for the knockout stage of the competition. That reflects the talent within this squad.

Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Folarin Balogun, Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi, and Timothy Weah are all excellent forwards. A midfield featuring Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, and Tyler Adams is full of industry, and the defense is pretty solid. Most of these players now represent big clubs in Europe, and they will be undaunted by the prospect of facing teams like Uruguay.

Panama

Panama is now the third-best team in North America, according to the latest FIFA world rankings. Los Canaleros are ranked No. 49 in the world, which leaves them behind the US and Mexico but ahead of Canada, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.

They have been steadily improving in recent years. Last summer, they beat the USMNT on penalties in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals. They were a little unfortunate to lose 1-0 to Mexico in the final, as Santiago Giménez snatched a last-gasp winner. Panama has a decent record against the US, with two wins and two defeats in the last four meetings between the two squads.

This is just the second time that Panama has been invited to compete at Copa America. It crashed out in the group stage in 2016. Los Canaleros are unaccustomed to facing teams like Uruguay, so it will be a useful opportunity to test themselves. There are no superstars on the Panamanian squad, but experienced players like Aníbal Godoy, Alberto Quintero, and Cecilio Waterman will aim to make this team competitive.

Bolivia

Bolivia’s players could be a little low on confidence as they prepare for Copa America. They have lost five of their six games so far in South America’s 2026 World Cup qualifying group, including a 3-0 defeat to Uruguay. Their record against the Uruguayans is poor, with five defeats in their last six meetings.

The Bolivian squad is not particularly formidable, but La Verde tend to punch above their weight during World Cup qualifying campaigns. That is largely down to their impressive home record. They play their home games in La Paz, which is around 12,000 feet above sea level. Rivals tend to struggle at that altitude, which has helped Bolivia secure some strong results in recent years.

However, they tend to struggle on the road. At Copa America, they will be playing in Texas, New Jersey, and Florida, so they are heavy underdogs to win Group C.

Key teams & players to watch in Group C

Darwin Núñez: The Liverpool striker is quick, intelligent, and unpredictable, but his finishing is often erratic, so he will need to be more clinical in front of goal for Uruguay.

Christian Pulisic: The 25-year-old forward is now in the prime of his career, and he has been enjoying a new lease of life since moving from Chelsea to AC Milan last summer. Pulisic has scored 28 goals in 66 games for his country, which is a superb record for a winger.

Gio Reyna: The young midfielder has had a tough couple of years, but he often raises his game when playing for the USMNT. Reyna was named man of the match in the 2023 and 2024 CONCACAF Nations League finals.

Cecilio Waterman: The veteran forward is Panama’s most dangerous attacker, with eight goals in 21 appearances for his country.

2024 Copa America Group C FAQ

Who is the manager for team Uruguay?

Marcelo Bielsa is the Uruguayan manager. He is one of the world’s most illustrious coaches, and he led Argentina to a runner-up finish at Copa America back in 2004. He took over leading Uruguay in 2023, following spells at Athletic Bilbao, Marseille, Lille, and Leeds United.

Who will captain the USMNT at Copa America?

Christian Pulisic will be the US captain at Copa America. He was just 20 years of age when he captained the United States for the first time back in November 2018, and he is now firmly established as the leader of this group.

What formation will Panama play at Copa America?

Panama typically plays with a 3-4-3 formation. However, that approach proved ineffective when Los Canaleros lost 3-0 to Mexico in the 2024 CONCACAF Nations League semifinals. Manager Thomas Christiansen switched to a 4-4-2 formation for Panama’s subsequent game, which resulted in a 1-0 loss to Jamaica, so he may go to a Plan B for Copa America.

Has Bolivia ever won Copa America?

Yes, Bolivia won Copa America in 1963. La Verde were also runners-up in 1997, but they have struggled to make an impact since then. They reached the quarterfinals in 2015, but they have fallen at the group stage in all of their other appearances.
