Breaking down top Euro 2024 betting favorites

Europe accounts for eight of the top 10 teams in the FIFA world rankings. The likes of France, England, and Spain have been very consistent at major tournaments in recent years, so it is unsurprising to see them at the top of soccer odds boards. Read below for a look at the key strengths and weaknesses of each of the top teams:

England ()

England is the favorite to win Euro 2024 after dominating its rivals during the qualifying campaign. The highlights included a 3-1 victory over Italy, a 2-0 win against Ukraine, and a 7-0 demolition job on North Macedonia.

Manager Gareth Southgate has a wealth of world-class talent at his disposal, including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka. There are still question marks regarding the defense, but England’s recent record at major tournaments is solid. The Three Lions lost to Italy on penalties in the final of the last European Championship, but the squad looks more mature now.

France ()

Some sportsbooks initially made France and England the joint favorites for Euro 2024, but they changed their tune after the groups were drawn. Les Bleus landed in a far tougher group than England, alongside the Netherlands and Austria.

Les Bleus have enjoyed a great deal of success during Didier Deschamps’ tenure as manager. They won the 2018 World Cup, clinched the UEFA Nations League in 2021, and were a little unfortunate to lose to Argentina on penalties in the 2022 World Cup final. The French squad will likely be eager to exorcize that demon at Euro 2024.

Germany ()

Germany is the most successful team in the history of this competition. It has won the Euros three times and finished second on another three occasions. However, Germany’s recent record at major tournaments has been dismal. It lost 2-0 to England in the Round of 16 at the last European Championship and then crashed out in the group stage at the 2022 World Cup.

Yet Germany is hosting the Euros this year, so it will benefit from home support. It lacks a superstar striker — whereas England can call upon Kane and France has Kylian Mbappé — but Germany’s squad boasts a superb midfield and a solid defense.

Spain ()

Luis de la Fuente made a strong start to his reign as Spain’s manager by leading the team to the UEFA Nations League title in 2023. Spain is also likely to land on the opposite side of the bracket to England and France, giving it a relatively clear path to the final.

The Spanish midfield is arguably the best in the world, featuring Rodri, Pedri, and Martín Zubimendi, and the defense is also strong. Striker Álvaro Morata has struggled at major tournaments in the past, but if he is firing on all cylinders, La Furia Roja could go a long way.

Portugal ()

The sheer depth of talent within the Portuguese squad is noteworthy. Cristiano Ronaldo tends to dominate the headlines, but the supporting cast features Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Bruno Fernandes, Gonçalo Ramos, Rafael Leão, and various other superstars.

Defensive frailties have been the Achilles’ heel for Portugal in the past, but it now has greater depth in this area. Youngsters such as António Silva and Gonçalo Inácio can provide cover for Rúben Días and Pepe.
