What to watch for in NFL preseason Week 2

As expected, we saw limited time from starters during the first full week of preseason action, but there were a few headline appearances, including Patrick Mahomes and Derek Carr. We could see some more notable names hit the field in Week 2 of preseason action.

Beginning with the 2021 season, the NFL reduced the preseason schedule from four to three weeks. When each team had four exhibition contests to work with, the third game was traditionally regarded as the “dress rehearsal game,” in which the first units played for a quarter or two.

Now that the slate has been reduced, starters will likely see more time in week two, while backups and those battling for roster spots will be the main focus in the third game. There are a few notable QB battles to keep an eye on as the exhibition season continues.

Indianapolis Colts: First-round draft pick Anthony Richardson is clearly viewed as the future in Indianapolis. If it looks like he needs more seasoning as training camp continues, Gardner Minshew could be in line to start in Week 1.

San Francisco 49ers: Brock Purdy is trending in the right direction following offseason elbow surgery. The QB room is crowded, however, as evidenced by Brandon Allen, Sam Darnold, and Trey Lance all taking snaps in the team’s preseason opener.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: In one of the more intriguing preseason storylines, Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are locked in a battle to see who will take over as QB1 in Tampa Bay following Tom Brady’s retirement.

Tennessee Titans: Ryan Tannehill appears to be locked in as the starter. It’s not as clear-cut behind him, as second-year pro Malik Willis and rookie Will Levis are competing for the backup gig.

Washington Commanders: The team’s lengthy search for a franchise QB continues. Sam Howell is likely to be the starter, but he could be pushed by veteran Jacoby Brissett

NFL preseason Week 2 schedule

Week 2 of the NFL preseason begins on Thursday night with a standalone game. The action continues throughout the weekend, with 11 matchups on Saturday, before wrapping up with a single contest each on Sunday and Monday nights. Here’s a look at all 16 games and the latest betting lines for each.

Cleveland Browns vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Browns are 1-1 through two preseason games, falling at home to the Commanders last week. Deshaun Watson saw the field briefly, but the first unit could get a longer look this week. The Eagles opened their exhibition season with a one-point loss to the Ravens. Backup QB Marcus Mariota was productive in limited time, throwing for 58 yards and rushing for 29.

Carolina Panthers vs. New York Giants

The Panthers opened the preseason with a thud, falling 27-0 at home to the Jets. Bryce Young went 4/6 for 21 yards during his brief appearance. The Giants, meanwhile, lost a 21-16 decision to the Lions in what was mainly a battle of backups and players competing for roster spots and depth chart positioning.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Atlanta Falcons

Last week, the Bengals lost to the Packers at home by a score of 36-19. Understandably, the team is taking a cautious approach to the preseason following a training camp injury scare for Joe Burrow. The Falcons last picked up a 19-3 victory over the Dolphins. Highly touted rookie Bijan Robinson and other starters watched from the sidelines.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Detroit Lions

Last time out, the Jaguars won a 28-23 decision over the Cowboys. Trevor Lawrence saw some time, throwing for 36 yards, one touchdown, and one pick. The Lions, meanwhile, picked up a five-point home win over the Giants. Jared Goff and much of the first team had the evening off.

Miami Dolphins vs. Houston Texans

The Dolphins kicked off their preseason with a 19-3 loss to the Falcons. Skylar Thompson and Mike White took the snaps at QB, combining for 149 yards and three picks. The Texans, meanwhile, pulled out a 20-9 win over the Patriots. C.J. Stroud threw for 13 yards and a pick in his debut, adding six rushing yards.

Buffalo Bills vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Bills took down the Colts by a score of 23-19 on Aug. 12. Matt Barkley handled the bulk of the snaps, completing 14/15 for 172 yards and a pair of TDs. The Steelers were last in action on Aug. 11, defeating the Buccaneers by a score of 27-17. Kenny Pickett threw for 70 yards and a touchdown during limited action.

Chicago Bears vs. Indianapolis Colts

The Bears defeated the Titans 23-17 a week ago behind a two-TD outing from Justin Fields, including a 62-yard strike to DJ Moore in the first quarter. Elsewhere, the Colts fell 23-19 to the Bills last week. Anthony Richardson went 7/12 for 67 yards and a pick, along with seven rushing yards.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New York Jets

The Buccaneers fell at home to the Steelers by a score of 27-17 in their first game of the exhibition season. Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask both saw time as the training camp battle continues. The Jets are 1-1 in the preseason following a 27-0 victory over the Panthers. Aaron Rodgers has yet to take the field in the exhibitions.

New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers

The majority of starters had the game off when the Patriots lost to the Texans in the team’s preseason opener. Bailey Zappe handled the bulk of the snaps under center. Jordan Love, meanwhile, threw for 46 yards and a touchdown during the Packers’ 36-19 win over the Bengals.

Tennessee Titans vs. Minnesota Vikings

Malik Willis and Will Levis combined for 246 yards and two picks during the Titans’ 23-17 loss to the Bears a week ago. The Vikings most recently fell to the Seahawks by a score of 24-13. Rookie wideout Jordan Addison hauled in one of his three targets for 220 yards.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Arizona Cardinals

The defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs dropped their preseason opener to the Saints. Patrick Mahomes went 2/2 for 15 yards in very limited action. The Cardinals, meanwhile, pulled out a one-point win over the Broncos last time out. Clayton Tune and David Blough both threw for TDs.

Denver Broncos vs. San Francisco 49ers

Russell Wilson threw for 93 yards and a TD as the Broncos lost their preseason opener to the Cardinals, 18-17. Elsewhere, in the final game of last week’s preseason action, the 49ers were clobbered by the Raiders, 34-7. Trey Lance, Sam Darnold, and Brandon Allen combined for 214 yards, one touchdown, and one INT.

Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Rams

Last week, during the Raiders’ convincing win over the 49ers, Zamir White carried the ball 13 times for 43 yards and a TD. The team is still at a contract impasse with Josh Jacobs, last season’s NFL leader in rushing yards. The Rams most recently lost 34-17 to the Chargers, with Stetson Bennett handling the bulk of the QB snaps.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Seattle Seahawks

Will Grier threw for two TDs and Deuce Vaughn ran in another last week, but it wasn’t enough as the Cowboys fell to the Jaguars, 28-23. The Seahawks, meanwhile, picked up a 24-13 victory over the Vikings. Drew Lock threw for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and one pick.

New Orleans Saints vs. Los Angeles Chargers

For his first game action as a member of the Saints, Derek Carr went 6/8 for 70 yards and a TD a week ago as the team pulled out a two-point win over the Chiefs. Easton Stick threw for 109 yards and a touchdown, as the Chargers defeated the Rams 34-17 in last week’s action.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Washington Commanders

The Ravens have now won 24 preseason games in a row following a 20-19 victory over the Eagles last time out. Tyler Huntley threw for 88 yards and a touchdown. Sam Howell went 9/12 for 77 yards and a TD as the Commanders defeated the Browns by a score of 17-15.

What bets can you place on NFL preseason games?

When it’s time for NFL Week 1 odds, bettors will have a full menu of wagering options. During the preseason, the options are much more limited. The top attractions are the big three bets: moneyline, spread, and over/under.

Additional wagers are available for quarters and halves, such as a first-quarter spread or second-half total. You can also place simple parlay wagers on a single game or multiple games, while player props generally aren’t available during the preseason.

NFL preseason Week 1 betting recap

For last week’s preseason games, here’s how it all shook out from a betting perspective

There was a pretty steady correlation between the moneyline and spread results. However, it was nearly even for both favorites and underdogs on the two metrics, which helps to demonstrate the general unpredictability of exhibition games.
