Favorites to win the 2024 US Open

Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler is the betting favorite to win the US Open. He holds down the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking and is in the midst of an exceptional season. Scheffler has four victories under his belt in 2024, including the Masters. At last month’s PGA Championship, he finished in a tie for eighth place.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy is second in the latest lines. He’s third in the OWGR and has finished in a tie for 13th or better at his last four events. His lone victory of the season came at the Wells Fargo Championship. Interestingly, last year’s US Open Winner, Wyndham Clark, also won the Wells Fargo in advance of his major victory.

Xander Schauffele

Xander Schauffele is third on the odds board. He won the PGA Championship by carding a -21, one stroke better than second-place finisher Bryson DeChambeau. Schauffele has moved into second in the OWGR after beginning the year in sixth. He has finished in a tie for 10th or better in nine of the 12 events he has competed at in 2024.

Past winners

McIlroy won the 2011 US Open and finished second last year, a single stroke behind Clark. Scheffler’s best finish at this major was a tie for second in 2022, while Schauffele’s top performance was a tie for third in 2019. Other previous winners in the field this year include Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, and Tiger Woods

Woods is one of many longshots in a field that’s expected to include 156 golfers. At most of the top golf betting sites, just 16 entrants currently have odds of less than +5000 to win the event. Just 17 others are at +9900 or less, with the remainder of the field at +10000 or longer. Clark was a longshot winner last year at pre-tournament odds of +8500.

US Open returns to North Carolina

This will be the fourth time that Pinehurst has hosted the US Open. The major last took place here in 2014, with Martin Kaymer winning in convincing fashion. He carded a -9, with second-place finishers Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler finishing at -1.

It’s the second big golf event of the season in North Carolina. In May, the tour stopped at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte for the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy carded a -17 to win, five strokes ahead of second-place finisher Schauffele.

Quail Hollow hosted the last major golf tournament in the state, the 2017 PGA Championship. Justin Thomas won that one at -8, with a trio of golfers tied for second at -6.

The PGA Tour will return to North Carolina for one of the final events of the season. The Wyndham Championship will take place from Aug. 8-11 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Lucas Glover is the defending champion.

Webb Simpson is among the local golfers who will compete at the US Open. The Charlotte resident officially punched his ticket into the field at a qualifying event at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham earlier this month.

US Open course and weather report

Pinehurst Resort is a sprawling property featuring nine 18-hole golf courses. Golfers will compete on course No. 2, which is typically set at 7,588 yards. The course will play at 7,548 yards and par 70 for the US Open, which is generally regarded as the most challenging of the four yearly golf majors.

At Kaymer’s win in 2014, the course was 7,562 yards. In 2005, Michael Campbell was the surprising winner at even. Woods finished second at +2, with the course set at a challenging 7,214 yards. Pinehurst’s first US Open was in 1999. Payne Stewart carded a -1 to win on the 7,175-yard layout, a stroke ahead of Phil Mickelson

The extended weather forecast for Pinehurst, North Carolina, calls for warm and summery conditions. High temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80s for the first two days and then rise into the lower 90s for weekend play. There’s a chance of morning showers on Thursday, with minimal winds in the forecast for all four days.

US Open purse

The purse size for the 2024 US Open is not officially out yet. Looking back to last year, the total prize fund was $20 million, with Clark taking home $3.6 million for his first-place finish. The purse and top prize will likely be in the same ballpark this year.

The purse size wasn’t announced for the first two majors of the season until right before the events teed off. The Masters purse was $20 million, with Scheffler taking home $3.6 million. It was $18.5 million for the PGA Championship, $3.33 of which went to Schauffele.
