In Sunday’s NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles, a lot of attention will be on 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. After coming on in relief for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13, Purdy has gone from acceptable replacement to dependable starter for San Francisco.

Over/Under Passing Yards
In last week’s defensive battle with the Dallas Cowboys, Purdy threw for 214 yards on 29 attempts. The week before against Seattle, he had just one more attempt and one fewer completion, but managed 332 yards through the air. Against the Eagles, he faces a defense that was the best in the league against the pass in the regular season, allowing an average of 179.8 passing yards per game. The Eagles were nowhere near as strong against the run, which could mean San Francisco leans more on the ground game and gives Purdy fewer shots through the air.
Over/Under Passing Touchdowns
In seven starts for the 49ers, Purdy has thrown for fewer than two touchdowns only once. That was last week, against the Cowboys, when he went without a single touchdown pass for the first time since he took over at quarterback in San Francisco.
Over/Under Passing Attempts
Purdy has attempted 31 or more passes in a game only twice this season. The first came in Week 13, when he first took over for the injured Garoppolo. The second was an overtime victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on New Year’s Day. When the 49ers running game is firing, Purdy typically attempts fewer than 30 passes.

Purdy typically isn’t eager to take off with the football, and most of his running gains are ones of opportunity or necessity. The most he’s ever logged in a single NFL game is 16 yards in the playoff win over Seattle, and 13 of those yards came on one long scamper. He’s never attempted more than four runs in a game, and half of the times he hit that number he still ended up with negative yardage for the game.

Purdy’s done a good job taking care of the ball, having thrown only four interceptions this season and none so far in the regular season. But the Eagles picked off 17 passes in the regular season, tied for third-best in the NFL. If the 49ers fall behind early and have to air it out more while trying to play catch-up, the chances of at least one pass falling into the wrong hands may go up.

In two playoff games, Purdy now has as many rushing touchdowns as he did all season. The bad news is that it brings his grand total of NFL rushing touchdowns to two.
