UFC 306 goes down at Sphere in Las Vegas this Satuday, Sept. 14, headlined by UFC men’s bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili. Despite being the reigning champion, O’Malley opened as a +120 underdog in the main event bout. That line has since flipped, with O’Malley at -120 and challenger Dvalishvili now the underdog at +114.
Dvalishvili had been as high as -200 soon after the 135-pound title fight was announced, but the line has narrowed gradually as fight week drew closer. The odds shifted slightly just recently after Dvalishvili posted a video to social media showing a cut over his eye that he’d sustained in training.
The cut isn’t expected to affect the status of the fight, though O’Malley has said he plans to target the cut right away in the bout. The UFC has invested a considerable amount of money in this one-off event at Sphere, with the company banking on the popularity of both O’Malley and Dvalishvili to boost ticket sales.
The UFC has branded the event Riyadh Season Noche UFC, in honor of Mexico’s independence day. UFC women’s flyweight champion Alexa Grasso, currently the UFC’s only champion hailing from Mexico, will rematch former champ Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event.
Grasso is currently at -110 in the fight, with Shevchenko at -105. This will be the third straight fight between Grasso and Shevchenko. Grasso won the first bout in 2023 after jumping to Shevchenko’s back for an opportunistic submission. The second meeting, which was this past September, ended in a draw after a closely contested affair.
Grasso opened as a significant underdog in both prior bouts but opened as a very slight favorite for this trilogy fight. For Shevchenko, this is the first fight in eight years for which she has not opened as a clear betting favorite.
