The big news is that Neuer is on the squad. The 38-year-old goalkeeper has not played for Team Germany since breaking his leg in 2022, but he is now back in business for Bayern Munich, and he will compete with Marc-André ter Stegen for a place in the starting XI.
Toni Kroos has also earned a place in the squad. Real Madrid’s midfield maestro will retire after this tournament, so he will aim for a glorious swansong before hanging up his boots.
Nagelsmann also called up four uncapped players: goalkeepers Oliver Baumann and Alex Nubel, Bayern midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović, and Hoffenheim striker Maximilian Beier. Pavlović has been superb for Bayern Munich this season, and he could bring youthful vitality to a midfield populated with veterans like Kroos and Ilkay Gündogan.
Key players left out
Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka did not make Germany’s 27-man squad for Euro 2024, though Pavlović, his midfield partner at Bayern this season, did.
Mats Hummels and Julian Brandt helped Borussia Dortmund reach the 2024 Champions League final, but both are not on the squad for Euro 2024. Some other experienced players also missed out, including Bernd Leno, Kevin Trapp, Matthias Ginter, Niklas Süle, Robin Gosens, Jonas Hofmann, and Emre Can.
Germany will also be without the injured trio of Serge Gnabry, Timo Werner, and Felix Nmecha. The loss of Gnabry is a blow, but the Germans still have a lot of pace and quality in attack.

Projecting Germany’s starting 11 for Euro 2024
Neuer has been Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2010, so he could start at this tournament after recently returning from injury.
Nagelsmann is likely to opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation. Jonathan Tah has been magnificent for Bayer Leverkusen this season, so he could start alongside Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger at the heart of the defense, with Joshua Kimmich and Maximilian Mittelstädt on the flanks.
Kroos, Gundogan and Robert Andrich are likely to form a midfield triumvirate, although Pavlović could potentially take Andrich’s place. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz is expected to spearhead the attack, with Musiala and Wirtz on the wings. Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and Niclas Füllkrug provide some alternative attacking options for Nagelsmann.
