Real Madrid entered the semifinal round as the biggest favorite to win it all but needed some late heroics to overcome a one-goal deficit and beat Bayern Munich 2-1 to advance. Now the team will face a Dortmund side that hasn’t won a Champions League title since 1997 but has already overcome long odds to make it this far.

Real Madrid made this final by the skin of its teeth. The quarterfinal win over Manchester City on penalty kicks was an upset all on its own, and it took two extremely late goals to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Bayern Munich in the semifinals. This is a team that has made a habit of finding last-minute miracles, but it’s hard to argue with the results. Real Madrid will be gunning for a 15th Champions League title here, far more than any other team, and it will be doing so against a Bundesliga team that was never expected to make it this far.
Borussia Dortmund began the quarterfinal round as the biggest underdog left in the field at +1100. Consecutive 1-0 victories over Paris Saint-Germain punched the squad’s ticket to the final, following up on a 5-4 aggregate win in a comeback effort over Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinal round. Dortmund has had something of a disappointing year in the Bundesliga but has been strong at home throughout this Champions League campaign. That makes the single-game final in London something of a tougher task, but Dortmund will likely consider it a success just to make it this far after remaining a long shot for so much of the year.
