Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway
Gaethje (25-4) comes from a wrestling background, but he’s been known as an exciting knockout artist for essentially his entire professional career in MMA. At times, he can get a little reckless in search of a brawl, but in recent years he’s found ways to maintain his aggressive striking style without ignoring sound defensive principles. Of his 25 pro victories, 20 have come via knockout or TKO. That includes his last fight, a head kick knockout win over former interim lightweight champ Dustin Poirier. Gaethje has won just one fight via submission, and has only been the distance four times in 29 fights.
Holloway (25-7) is coming up from 145 pounds to take this fight in the 155-pound division. The last time he tried that he struggled to deal with the difference in power and lost a unanimous decision. This time Holloway had more time to prepare for the move up in weight, though it’s still unclear how he’ll deal with the force of Gaethje’s strikes, which have proved too much even for many natural lightweights. Holloway is known for a volume striking style, piling up damage over the course of a fight. His last fight resulted in a third-round knockout win, but prior to that he went the five-round distance in eight straight fights. Holloway has never been knocked out, and has an almost even split between decision wins and victories by KO/TKO.

Despite his reputation as a knockout artist, Gaethje doesn’t have all that many early finishes. He had a string of first-round knockouts in 2018-2019, but none since then. Many of his knockouts have come in the second or third rounds, as the damage he inflicts – especially with leg kicks – starts to take its toll.
Holloway wins very few fights in the early going at this stage of his career. He rarely goes all out looking to put opponents away in those first couple rounds, and instead focuses on setting a pace he could gradually increase. His last first-round finish came in 2015, and that was due to a freak injury to his opponent. Even when Holloway finishes opponents inside the distance, it typically isn’t until the third round or later.
