The 2024 Sugar Bowl pits the Texas Longhorns against the Washington Huskies in a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup. The current spread for the game at many of the best sports betting sites has Texas as a -4 favorite, with the over/under line set at 63.5 points. 

The game comes our way on Monday, Jan. 1, from the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Broadcast coverage will be on ESPN, with kickoff set for 8:45 p.m. ET.

Sugar Bowl betting preview

Texas closed the season at 12-1, defeating Oklahoma State 49-21 to win the Big 12 title. The lone defeat for the Longhorns came at the hands of Oklahoma in a 34-30 shootout. The Longhorns are 7-5-1 against the spread and 5-8 on the over/under. Ewers has thrown for 3,161 yards and 21 TDs and rushed for another five touchdowns. 

Washington is a perfect 13-0 on the season. Last time out, the Huskies defeated Oregon by a score of 34-31 to win the Pac-12 championship. The Huskies are 6-6-1 ATS and 6-7 on totals. Penix Jr. had a stellar individual campaign and was a Heisman finalist as a result. He threw for 4,218 yards and 33 TDs and also had three rushing touchdowns. 

The two programs last squared off at the 2022 Alamo Bowl, a 27-20 win for Washington. Texas leads 3-2 in all-time meetings. This will be the first CFP semifinal game for the Longhorns, who last won the national title in 2005. The Huskies are 0-1 in the CFP, losing a semifinal game in 2016. They last claimed a national crown in 1991.

The Sugar Bowl has taken place annually since 1935. Caesars Superdome is the host venue. Since 2014, the game has been part of the College Football Playoff, hosting a semifinal game every three years. Here are the results from the last five editions.
