How does the Ryder Cup tournament work?

The Ryder Cup takes place every two years. Since 1979, it has been contested between two teams of 12 golfers, one consisting of American players and one with European players. Prior to that, it was the US vs. Great Britain.

This year’s captains are Zach Johnson for Team USA and Luke Donald for Team Europe. The event plays out over three days. The first two days of the competition feature one four-match session of fourball and one four-match session of foursomes.

The final day of the event consists of 12 singles matches. Each match during the three days is worth a point, with a half-point awarded in the event of a tie. The winner is the first team to reach 14 ½ points. If the event happens to end in a 14-14 tie, the holder of the Ryder Cup will retain it.
