UFC 293 odds – Adesanya vs. Strickland
Israel Adesanya () vs. Sean Strickland ()
Adesanya (24-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC) has spent the better part of the last four years as the UFC’s 185-pound champion, and with good reason. He’s a technical yet creative striker who is most dangerous when he gets to fight at distance. He’s a tall, long fighter for this division, and when he can keep opponents at long range, he’s very dangerous while remaining hard to hit.
Strickland (27-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) was not the UFC’s original choice for this middleweight title fight. The plan was to match Adesanya up with rising contender Dricus du Plessis, who had fomented a regional rivalry with Adesanya before winning a big fight against former champ Robert Whittaker recently. But when du Plessis declined to make the quick turnaround to take this fight, the UFC opted to go with Strickland instead.
On paper, this is a very tough matchup for Strickland. He’s a solid overall striker, though not on Adesanya’s level in terms of pure kickboxing. He’s also not an especially big middleweight, which will leave him with the same problems many other opponents have faced when it comes to figuring out how to manage the range against Adesanya.
Strickland could very well try to take Adesanya down and beat him on the mat, but the champ’s defensive wrestling is better than he gets credit for, and so far the only opponents who’ve been able to take him down and keep him there in his UFC tenure have had the aid of a size advantage — which Strickland won’t have.
