Super Bowl LVII saw record legal online US sports betting activity, according to data from GeoComply.
More than 100 million legal sports betting app pings were tracked over the weekend by the location software provider used by apps like FanDuel and DraftKings. That was a 20% increase from Super Bowl weekend last year.
GeoComply also registered 7.4 million unique accounts over the weekend, a 32% increase from last year.
Where new Super Bowl betting activity came from
Ohio just launched legal sports betting in January and led all states with 1.1 million unique accounts.
Along with Kansas and Maryland, it was one of three newly legal states to launch online betting since last year’s Super Bowl.
State leaders for total transactions were:
- New York: 13.9 million
- Ohio: 12.6 million
- Pennsylvania: 11.8 million
- New Jersey: 9.1 million
- Michigan: 7.5 million
Super Bowl betting firsts
More than 100,000 transactions came from in or around State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the first Super Bowl host stadium in a legal wagering state.
“Super Bowl LVII was a record-breaking event. GeoComply data reveals that Americans’ interest in legally betting on the Super Bowl has never been higher, GeoComply Co-Founder & CEO Anna Sainsbury said in a press release. “It also showed that many fans at State Farm Stadium embraced their newfound ability to bet while watching the game in person.”
Home state betting on the big game
Super Bowl LVII also marked the first time a team from a legal sports betting state played in the Super Bowl.
Pennsylvania, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, saw the third-most US transactions across 793,073 unique accounts.
Kansas, only a 15-minute drive from the Kansas City Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri, saw 2.18 million transactions across 180,482 unique accounts.
Kambi sees record turnover from same game parlays
Same-game parlays (SGP) made up more than a third of all bets placed pregame via software provider Kambi.
SGPs, powered by the sportsbook provider’s Bet Builder technology, helped make Super Bowl LVII turnover Kambi’s second-highest ever for a single event, it said in a press release.
Kambi powers several sports betting apps, including BetRivers Sportsbook and Barstool, though the Penn Entertainment sportsbook is in the process of transitioning to its own technology stack by summer 2023.
