Residents of and visitors to the Commonwealth will finally be able to participate in legal MA sports betting as of Tuesday morning.
The three sportsbooks available to take legal Massachusetts sports betting handle at 10 am ET Tuesday are:
- Plainridge Park Casino (Barstool Sportsbook)
- MGM Springfield (BetMGM Sportsbook)
- Encore Boston Harbor (WynnBet Sportsbook)
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission worked into Monday evening to finalize details. They adopted to approve operations certificates for the three properties by a 4-0 vote.
“We should be good to go for 10 a.m. launch,” MGC chair Cathy Judd-Stein said.
When will online MA sports betting start?
Massachusetts bettors will be able to legally wager on Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12, 2023.
The state will launch online sports betting in early March prior to the NCAA Tournament. As of now, there will be 11 online sportsbooks available in the Commonwealth. Only Betway has already said it will not launch on time.
Simulcast facility Raynham Park will also add a 30,000-square foot retail sportsbook via Caesars Sportsbook. The sportsbook will launch by spring 2023.
Retail MA sports betting process final
State Treasurer Deb Goldberg estimated to ABC5 that state revenue from sports betting would be between $35 million to $50 million.
Commissioners Eileen O’Brien (EBH), Bradford Hill (MGM) and Jordan Maynard (PPC) received tours of the sportsbooks as the remaining details were finalized. They visited the cages and kiosks, and used the betting software.
Former pro athletes Ray Bourque (MGM) and Rob Ninkovich (PPC) will be in attendance Tuesday to make first bets as wagering gets underway.
RG messaging for retail sportsbooks
MGC director of research and responsible gaming Mark Vander Linden said Monday that there will be GameSense advisors located at the casinos.
They will be wearing green and black uniforms featuring the No. 421.
Vander Linden explained the number’s significance:
- 1: The percentage of your gross annual income that you should consider as a form of entertainment if you chose to gamble.
- 2: The max number of types of gambling that you would engage in (i.e. sports wagering, casino gaming, lottery).
- 4: The number of days per month that you should consider gambling as your form of entertainment.
The MGC announced Friday a voluntary self-exclusion program for sports bettors.
One final hurdle remaining
A memorandum of understanding must be executed by Tuesday morning.
The MOU is regarding an outstanding tax liability and child support issue prior to 10 a.m. launch.
“I anticipate that this will get resolved in the morning,” legal counsel Todd Grossman said.
“The administration says we should all be set to go,” Stein added.
