2026 World Cup Group C: Final Standings, Results and Recap
Group C at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came down to goal difference. Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1 in their opener at MetLife Stadium, won their remaining two matches and finished level on seven points, with Brazil taking first place thanks to a plus-six goal difference. Scotland earned its first World Cup win since 1990 but went home in third, while Haiti, back at the tournament for the first time since 1974, finished without a point.
Both group qualifiers made noise in the knockout rounds. Morocco knocked out the Netherlands and Canada before falling to France in the quarterfinals, and Brazil beat Japan before Norway ended its run in the Round of 16. The opening draw between Brazil and Morocco effectively settled the race for first, since both teams went on to win their next two matches. In the end, Brazil’s two 3-0 wins gave it the edge, while Morocco conceded twice in a wild 4-2 win over Haiti in Atlanta.
How each Group C team fared
Here’s how the four Group C teams finished their tournaments, from the group stage through the knockout rounds.
Brazil: Group winner, out in the Round of 16
Brazil leaned on Vinícius Júnior and Matheus Cunha, who accounted for all seven of its group goals. The Seleção came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in the Round of 32, then lost 2-1 to Norway in New Jersey as Erling Haaland scored twice late. It was Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990.
Morocco: Runner-up, out in the quarterfinals
The 2022 semifinalists backed up that run with another strong showing. Ismael Saibari scored in each of Morocco’s first two matches, and the Atlas Lions went on to beat the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32 and dominate co-host Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. France ended the run with a 2-0 quarterfinal win in Boston, with goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé.
Scotland: Third place, eliminated
John McGinn’s first-half goal against Haiti delivered Scotland’s first World Cup victory since beating Sweden in 1990. Scotland couldn’t score again, though, losing 1-0 to Morocco and 3-0 to Brazil, and its three points fell short of the cutoff for third-place qualifiers.
Haiti: Fourth place, eliminated
Haiti’s first World Cup appearance in 52 years ended without a point, but it wasn’t without moments. After losing narrowly to Scotland and falling 3-0 to Brazil, the Haitians scored twice against Morocco in their finale, including a Wilson Isidor goal, and pushed one of the tournament’s best teams in a 4-2 defeat.
Group C standout performers
These players did the most to shape Group C.
- Vinícius Júnior, Brazil: Scored four times in three group games, including the equalizer against Morocco and a brace against Scotland.
- Matheus Cunha, Brazil: Added three group-stage goals, two of them in the win over Haiti.
- Ismael Saibari, Morocco: Scored in both of Morocco’s first two games, including a second-minute winner against Scotland, and later converted the deciding penalty against the Netherlands.
- John McGinn, Scotland: His goal against Haiti was the difference in Scotland’s only win.
