Who Is The Giants Starting QB? Tommy DeVito & Daniel Jones Injury

Heading into their game today, the Giants have officially name Tommy DeVito the starter. That could change moving forward. The New York Giants have had rough injury luck and recently lost quarterback Daniel Jones (ACL) for the season during a 30-6 loss in Las Vegas. With Tyrod Taylor (ribs) on injured reserve and questionable to return at any point this year, the Giants are left with Tommy DeVito and Matt Barkley as the available quarterbacks on their roster heading into Week 10.

Sitting in last place in the NFC East, the Giants (2-7) were already longshots to make the playoffs. Now their odds are at or longer to earn a postseason berth, and they’re among the teams with the longest odds to win the Super Bowl

Will Tommy DeVito start at QB for the Giants?

Tommy DeVito took over mid-game for the Giants following Taylor’s injury in Week 8 and Jones’ injury in Week 9. The undrafted rookie has good mobility and managed a rushing touchdown against the Jets. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 175 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions against the Raiders. Over four seasons at Syracuse and one at Illinois, DeVito posted a 133 passer rating with 43 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Earlier in the week, Giants head coach Brian Daboll would not commit to DeVito as the starting quarterback going forward. The Giants signed 33-year-old journeyman Matt Barkley to their practice squad after placing Taylor on IR last week. Barkley has posted an 11:22 touchdown-to-interception ratio in action for six different NFL teams, most recently with the Bills.

The Giants also had the option to go to the open market to find quarterback depth. They hosted Jacob Eason for a workout on Tuesday. A former fourth-round selection by the Colts, Eason was waived by the Seahawks earlier this season.

Daniel Jones was struggling this year, with two passing touchdowns, six interceptions, and a 70.5 passer rating. The Giants’ offensive line has suffered from injuries, and Jones — who signed a four-year contract extension worth up to $160 million this offseason — took 30 sacks in his six appearances. Following Jones’ injury and the loss to the Raiders, the Giants dipped to to win the Super Bowl, to win the NFC East, and to make the playoffs. They also have odds of to have the worst regular season record.

Upcoming New York Giants matchups

The Giants are on the road for consecutive divisional matchups against Dallas and Washington over the next two weeks. They’re currently 16-point underdogs against a Cowboys team that beat them by a score of 40-0 at home in Week 1.

After those games, the Giants host the Patriots in Week 12, then have a bye week before hosting the Packers on Monday Night Football to end Week 14. They close the season with road games at the Saints and Eagles, followed by home games against the Rams and Eagles.

New Orleans Saints 4 – 8 – 0 Week 14: Dec. 8, 2024
Baltimore Ravens 8 – 5 – 0 Week 15: Dec. 15, 2024
Atlanta Falcons 6 – 6 – 0 Week 16: Dec. 22, 2024

What does the future hold for the Giants?

With Jones out and several offensive linemen hurt or on IR, the Giants might be looking to develop some younger talent the rest of the way. Saquon Barkley has been playing through multiple injuries and handled a massive workload with 39 touches in a Week 8 loss to the Jets. Matt Breida could see a few more touches to keep Barkley from wearing down this season.

Rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and second-year slot man Wan’Dale Robinson could see more work regardless of who is under center for the Giants. With Darren Waller (hamstring) on IR, second-year tight end Daniel Bellinger appears likely to start going forward.
