How to bet on NFL playoff futures
During the offseason, betting sites will release the odds for each team’s chances to make the playoffs. Betting will begin then and can continue as the odds shift and remain available for much of the season.
To make the playoffs: Dallas Cowboys
- Yes -250
- No +195
For the above example, odds of -250 for “yes” indicate that the sportsbook sees it as more likely that Dallas makes it to the postseason, as do the +195 odds for “no.”
However, the preseason odds won’t always be correct. There’s regular turnover in NFL playoff participants from season to season. What the odds do provide, though, is a realistic set of expectations for all 32 teams.
For some clubs, the postseason odds will hover around -110 for both choices, similar to a spread or total bet. The span between the numbers can be much wider for other teams, just like what you find in some moneyline bets.
As a season-long wager, the bet requires a long-term perspective, as your funds will remain tied up until there’s an outcome. Beyond the chance to win some money if your bet is correct, NFL playoff futures can give you something else to root for as the season progresses.
NFL postseason format
Beginning with the 2020 season, the NFL expanded the playoff field from 12 to 14 teams. It was the first such expansion since 1990 and included several notable changes. Here’s how the format works:
- The four division winners (East, North, South and West) from the AFC and NFC automatically qualify, for a total of eight teams.
- The remaining six spots go to wild card teams — three from each conference.
- Tiebreakers will determine qualifiers and seeds as necessary.
- The postseason tournament is single-elimination. Winners advance, and losers go home.
- Teams are seeded one through seven in both conferences, with the top seed receiving a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
- The playoffs begin with Wild Card Weekend. There are six games in total, three each on the AFC and NFC sides, with winners advancing.
- Next is the Divisional Round — four games, two on each side of the bracket, with winners advancing.
- The final four teams square off in the AFC and NFC title games. The winners advance to play in the Super Bowl.
NFL playoff FAQs
The NFL changed its postseason format to 14 teams in 2020. The playoff field was previously 12 teams, as it had been since the 1990 season.
The playoffs begin on Jan. 10, 2026, and conclude with Super Bowl 60 on February 8.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are among the top favorites to reach the NFL playoffs for the 2025-26 season.
Many sportsbooks offer promo codes and special promotions for the NFL playoffs. Popular options include BetMGM, DraftKings, bet365, FanDuel, Caesars, and Fanatics. Be sure to check their websites for the latest offers and eligibility requirements.
Super Bowl 60 will be hosted at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The game is scheduled for February 8, 2026.
Even if a wild‑card team wins the Super Bowl, the team draft order is still based on regular‑season records first, then strength of schedule, and then playoff results as tiebreakers. Playoff performance doesn’t directly bump a team’s draft slot above a worse regular‑season record.
