Lions vs. Vikings Props & Odds: Player Props For David Montgomery & More

A huge NFC North clash is set for Sunday, with the undefeated Minnesota Vikings (5-0) hosting the Detroit Lions (4-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET in Minneapolis, with Fox on the broadcast.

The Lions were favorites by over a field goal when this line opened in the preseason and were close to even on the point spread on the lookahead line before they lost stud defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (leg) for the season. Detroit opened the week as a 2.5-point underdog in NFL Week 7 odds and is down to a 1.5-point dog at most books, with even odds on the moneyline. The total line is at 50.5 points.

The Vikings survived a close win over the Jets in London prior to a Week 6 bye. The status of Aaron Jones bears monitoring, as the veteran back is dealing with hip and hamstring injuries. Minnesota is about even with Detroit at +140 in NFC North winner odds. The Vikings opened the season with +750 odds, and the Lions were the favorites at -130.

Below, we’re focusing on some player props in one of the biggest matchups for Week 7 of the NFL season. We also cover a MI sportsbook promo ahead of the game below.

Player props for Lions vs. Vikings

How David Montgomery could get over 50.5 rushing yards

According to most analytics and football pundits, the Detroit Lions have the best offensive line in football. Montgomery is the hammer behind that blocking scheme, while Jahmyr Gibbs keeps defenses honest with his speed. Detroit’s offense has physically dominated the Seahawks and Cowboys in consecutive wins, and Montgomery rushed for 80 yards in Dallas.

Minnesota has played from ahead in all five wins, so opposing offenses haven’t been able to stick with their ground game. When the Vikings get ahead and turn their front seven loose on blitz packages, their defense has been wreaking havoc. Look for the Lions to offset that potential scenario by softening up the defensive front with Montgomery carrying early and often.

This Minnesota Vikings defense is elite, and Brian Flores is doing an excellent job adjusting to different opponents. The coaching staff will certainly be aware of Detroit’s desire to establish Montgomery on the ground and could devote more resources toward stopping the run to force Jared Goff into tougher situations as a passer.

While game flow has played a role, and Minnesota was lucky to face the Texans without Joe Mixon, the Vikings are allowing the second-fewest rushing yards per game (67.2) this season at just 3.6 yards per carry. Montgomery managed 55 rushing yards but averaged just 3.2 yards per carry at Minnesota last year, then was held to 40 yards on 10 carries in Detroit.

How Justin Jefferson could get over 91.5 receiving yards

Oddsmakers are expecting a high-scoring affair, with the Vikings coming off a bye and the Lions missing the league’s sack leader in Hutchinson. Jefferson is clearly the top weapon for a Vikings offense that could become quite pass-heavy if Aaron Jones is inactive or limited. Minnesota’s rushing attack was nonexistent against the Jets after Jones departed, and the Lions are allowing the third-fewest rushing yards per game (83.2) this season.

Detroit’s top cornerback, Carlton Davis, has missed practice time this week with a quad injury, and he might not be 100% by Sunday. Jefferson has posted at least 124 receiving yards in three of his last four matchups against Detroit, and his new quarterback, Sam Darnold, has established more consistency for Minnesota’s offense.

How Justin Jefferson could get under 91.5 receiving yards

Even for one of the best receivers in the game, this is a huge number. The Lions have been much better against the pass this season after revamping their secondary, and they got elite safety Brian Branch back to full health in Week 6. Jefferson has seen tons of attention from opposing defenses with Jordan Addison struggling to pose a consistent threat on the other side of the field, and the Vikings could become predictably one-dimensional without a strong running game.

The Lions keyed in on Jefferson in their last matchup and held him to just three catches for 64 yards. This will be a hotly contested game, and it’s possible Jefferson draws some flags on deep targets rather than pulling down deep balls from Darnold.
