Lamar Jackson looking for postseason breakthrough

Lamar Jackson is the favorite to win the regular season MVP award — which would be his second — but he entered these playoffs with a 1-3 record in the postseason. Now Jackson and the Ravens will take on the most successful franchise in the AFC over the past decade. When he last faced the Chiefs in Week 2 of the 2021-22 season, Jackson threw two interceptions but made up for it with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 36-35 home win.

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid trying to reinforce the Chiefs’ dynasty

The Chiefs have struggled offensively at times this season with Matt Nagy replacing longtime offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. They lost four of their last eight regular season games but bounced back with playoff victories over the Dolphins and Bills. Patrick Mahomes reverted to closer to his standards with 477 passing yards, three touchdowns, zero turnovers, and zero sacks allowed in those wins. Making a fourth Super Bowl in five seasons would help cement the status of this growing dynasty.

Ravens’ secondary versus Mahomes

In Week 16, the Ravens went into San Francisco against the hottest offense in football and dominated, forcing Brock Purdy into four interceptions in a 33-19 win. The Ravens allowed the fewest yards per pass attempt (5.2), forced the third most turnovers per game (1.7), and posted the fourth-highest sack rate (8.3%) this season, with defensive coordinator Mike McDonald calling a sophisticated scheme. Kyle Hamilton is one of the best safeties in the NFL, and the Ravens will hope to get veteran cornerback Marlon Humphrey (calf) back after he missed the divisional round.

Chiefs’ defensive front versus Ravens’ running game

The Ravens led the NFL in rushing yards per game (160.6) and rush attempts while averaging the third-most points per game (28.7) this season. Gus Edwards has been a weapon in the red zone, but he appeared to suffer a hand injury and yielded touches to Justice Hill in the divisional round. The Ravens spread out Houston’s defense with stretch plays and used Jackson as another threat in the running game. Jackson is averaging 103.3 rushing yards per game with three rushing touchdowns over his last four playoff games.

Chiefs vs. Ravens injury report

The Chiefs lost linebacker Willie Gay to a neck injury during their win in Buffalo on Sunday. Cornerback Mike Edwards left the game early with a concussion. Pro-Bowl guard Joe Thuney suffered a pectoral injury and may be questionable for this contest. Trent McDuffie left the game with an ankle injury but returned.

The Ravens hinted that Mark Andrews (ankle) could play for the first time since Week 11 in the divisional round, but the former All-Pro tight end did not. Now he has a chance to return this Sunday. Marlon Humphrey (calf) has been out since Week 17. Gus Edwards appeared to suffer a hand injury in the divisional round and may have sat out the fourth quarter for precautionary reasons.
