Player props for Bucs vs. Lions

How Baker Mayfield could get over 258.5 passing yards

Last season, Baker Mayfield experienced a resurgence under offensive coordinator Dave Canales. With Canales no longer on staff in Week 1, Mayfield still thrived with 289 passing yards and four touchdowns against Washington’s woeful secondary. The Lions looked to improve their secondary this offseason, but that unit still gave up 317 passing yards to Matthew Stafford and the Rams in their opener. Stafford attempted a whopping 49 passes in the overtime loss, indicating how Detroit’s efficient offense and strong defensive line can force opponents into a pass-heavy game plan. The Bucs ranked dead last in the NFL in yards per carry (3.6) last season, so 72.1 percent of their yards came through the air, marking the third-highest percentage in football.

How Baker Mayfield could get under 258.5 passing yards

Mayfield averaged 237.9 passing yards per game last season with Canales calling the plays. It’s possible his 2024-25 season doesn’t go as well under new offensive coordinator Liam Coen, and his Week 1 eruption was mostly due to Washington’s league-worst secondary. With upgraded personnel, the Lions can stick former Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis on his old teammate, Mike Evans, and try to neutralize the big receiver. Slot cornerback Brian Branch could contain Chris Godwin, forcing Mayfield to target his tertiary options. Detroit’s defense did a great job limiting receptions to running backs last season, allowing the second-fewest catches (59) while finishing as the only team to allow zero receiving touchdowns to backs, so Rachaad White and Bucky Irving might not get Mayfield many yards out of the backfield.

How Sam LaPorta could get 53.5 receiving yards

LaPorta averaged 52.3 receiving yards per game last season and led all tight ends with 10 receiving scores as a rookie, and 9 of those 10 touchdowns came at home. He caught four of five targets for 45 yards in Week 1 against the Rams and will draw an easier matchup on paper this Sunday. Tampa coughed up the third-most receptions (102) and yards (1,077) to tight ends last season and did a much better job limiting top receivers, so Jared Goff might be forced to look away from Amon-Ra St. Brown and target his talented tight end over the middle. Tampa is perennially strong against the run, which could force the Lions into more passing volume.

How Sam LaPorta could miss 53.5 receiving yards

The Bucs have a strong defense overall and they made some moves in recent years to ensure that their linebackers have a good mix of youth and experience. Tampa limited Washington to just 161 passing yards and a 2-for-8 conversion rate on third downs in Week 1 with a consistent pass rush bothering mobile rookie Jayden Daniels. LaPorta caught 9 of 11 targets for 65 yards against the Bucs in the playoffs last year. That’s encouraging volume, but generating only 7.2 yards per reception is concerning for a yardage prop. The fact that LaPorta burned this defense in January could convince Tampa’s coaches to divest more resources towards slowing him down.
