The 151st Kentucky Derby is set for May 3 at Churchill Downs, marking one of the most important betting days of the year for US sportsbooks.
Last year’s main event drew a record $210.7 million in wagering handle, according to Churchill Downs, surpassing the previous year’s $188.7 million. Across all 14 Kentucky Derby races, total handle reached $320.5 million, up from $288.7 million in 2023.
For sportsbooks, the Derby remains a key moment on the calendar — one of the few racing events that consistently draws casual bettors and first-time users. Operators with dedicated horse racing products, including FanDuel Racing and DK Horse, typically see spikes in app usage and customer acquisition during Derby Week.
FanDuel leans into Kentucky Derby betting
FanDuel, which has integrated horse racing and sports betting under a single wallet for over two years, is again leaning into the event through promotions, live content, and on-site coverage. New customers on FanDuel Racing or FanDuel Sportsbook can access a no sweat first bet for up to $500, while existing users receive a no sweat win bet on the Derby itself.
“The Kentucky Derby is one of the most historic sporting events in the world, and FanDuel is honored to be a part of it once again,” said Andrew Moore, general manager of racing at FanDuel, in a press release.
FanDuel TV will broadcast live from Churchill Downs throughout Derby Week, offering analysis, behind-the-scenes access, and commentary from its team of racing analysts.
Broader industry eyes race week
Other operators also expect to ramp up activation around the Derby, though not all offer fixed-odds or pari-mutuel racing products. DraftKings, which launched DK Horse in partnership with TwinSpires last year, will likely run promotions through its dedicated app. Caesars and BetMGM have traditionally focused on Derby-themed marketing and user engagement within their main sportsbooks.
For companies without a horse racing platform, the Derby still serves as a major brand exposure opportunity, particularly in states where advance deposit wagering is legal. The event also provides a short-term surge in handle and a high-profile test of app performance under pressure, especially with newer bettors logging in around post time.
The 2025 race will feature a 20-horse field of 3-year-old thoroughbreds running 1 1/4 miles in pursuit of the first jewel in the Triple Crown.
