Player props for Boston College vs. Virginia Tech
How Thomas Castellanos could get over 180.5 passing yards
The Eagles quarterback returned from a one-game absence to face Virginia and should be healthier coming out of a bye week. He passed for a season-high 254 yards on 30 attempts in the loss at Virginia and could see high volume in another negative game script. The Eagles have been one of the least effective rushing teams in the FBS this season, generating just 3.5 yards per carry, and the Hokies are allowing a healthy 7.2 yards per passing attempt.
Castellanos was a four-year starter in high school at Ware County and started 12 games last season, so he has plenty of experience in high-level games. Bill O’Brien is a respected offensive mind who could scheme up some easy completions for Castellanos in an effort to keep pace with a Hokies team that is averaging 30.5 points per game.
How Thomas Castellanos could get under 180.5 passing yards
A struggling offensive line will try to protect Castellanos from a ferocious pass rush in this matchup. Virginia Tech ranks second in the nation in sack rate (11.49%) and has held opponents to the 11th-lowest completion rate (55.2%) in part due to that pressure. Castellanos has absorbed nine sacks and thrown four interceptions over his last three starts while facing consistent pressure.
The Eagles opened the season with an impressive 28-13 win at Florida State by employing a ground-heavy game plan, with Castellanos rushing for 73 of their 263 yards and throwing for just 106 yards. Perhaps they go with that approach again if senior tailback Kye Robichaux is healthier after the bye.
How Kyron Drones could get over 186.5 passing yards
Drones passed for 189 yards in a tough matchup at Miami and passed for 201 yards in a blowout win at Stanford prior to the bye week. He appears to be hitting his stride after a slow start from a statistical standpoint, and in this matchup he’ll face a BC defense that is stronger against the run than against the pass.
BC just lost top cornerback Amari Jackson (ACL) for the season, and Tech could look to exploit some matchups against a diminished secondary. Da’Quan Felton emerged as a deep threat with four catches for 84 yards against Stanford, giving the Hokies a much-needed vertical dynamic to offset what has otherwise been a conservative passing attack this year.
How Kyron Drones could miss 186.5 passing yards
Even without Jackson, BC could have enough talent to play solid coverage against this Hokies receiving corps. Tech is clearly missing Ali Jennings (foot), and Drones completed just 53.3% of his passes for 163 yards per game in losses to Rutgers and Miami after Jennings suffered his injury.
If Tech abandons the run and Bhayshul Tuten fails to get much going against a solid defensive front, Drones could face a consistent pass rush and decide to use his legs to attempt to escape pressure and pick up yardage. After Jennings departed a win at Old Dominion with his injury, Drones rushed 30 times for 229 yards over a three-game stretch with limited passing production.
