Penn State vs. USC Odds & Props: Player Props For Drew Allar & More

The No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0) will play their first road game since Week 1 when they take on the USC Trojans (3-2) this Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Kickoff for this Big Ten matchup will be 3:30 p.m. ET, with CBS on the broadcast.

The Lions are 5.5-point favorites on the spread in college football Week 7 odds after starting the week closer to four-point favorites. The Trojans are getting +175 odds on the moneyline, and the line for total points has climbed to 50.5.

USC has fallen out of the AP Top 25 after a 24-16 road loss to Minnesota (24-16) last week. Miller Moss threw a pair of interceptions and fell well short of his passing prop in that loss, completing 23 of 38 for 200 passing yards. The Trojans are clearly missing leading linebacker Eric Gentry (concussion), who is out indefinitely.

Penn State had a stifling defense last season and has continued to throttle opposing offenses in decisive wins over Illinois (21-7) and UCLA (27-11) the past two weeks. The Lions’ offense includes a combination of steady junior quarterback Drew Allar with Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton forming a double-headed monster out of the backfield. You can check out more info on individual player props below.

Player props for Penn State vs. USC

How Drew Allar could get over 208.5 passing yards

While Penn State has employed a run-heavy offense over the past two seasons, Allar has been quite efficient when he’s had the opportunity to pass. The junior is completing 71% of his attempts for a healthy 10.7 yards per pass this season, and Penn State is averaging 244 passing yards per game.

The Lions could be pushed to pass more often in this matchup after shutting down their last few opponents. This is the smallest point spread for the Lions so far this season, and USC could be primed for a bounce-back effort at home after an upset loss in Minnesota.

Allar got over this number with 216 passing yards on just 17 attempts the last time the Lions were on the road in Week 1, and he averaged 266 passing yards per game over his final two road games during his sophomore season.

How Drew Allar could get under 208.5 passing yards

The USC defense is stronger against the pass than it is against the run. The Trojans are allowing the ninth-fewest passing yards per game (157.6) among FBS teams this season and getting opposing offenses off the field by holding them to the sixth-lowest conversion rate (26.3%) on third downs.

Cornerback Jacobe Covington and edge rusher Anthony Lucas are both back at practice after missing last week. The Trojans had a few inexperienced players in the lineup against Minnesota, and those underclassmen could be ready for a more complex game plan from capable defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn. Penn State prefers to win low-scoring games by bleeding the clock with its stud running backs, so volume is always a concern for Allar’s passing yardage.

How Miller Moss could get over 242.5 passing yards

The USC passing offense had a brutal matchup last week against Minnesota’s elite and experienced secondary. This is another tough spot, but Moss could continue to sling it in an effort to keep his team in the game. USC is averaging the fifth-most pass attempts (42.6) per game this season, and the Trojans are converting 51.5% of third downs, good for ninth-best in the FBS.

Moss averaged a whopping 323 passing yards per game against Power Four opponents Michigan, Wisconsin, and LSU prior to his rough performance against Minnesota. He also should have more weapons at his disposal this week after Makai Lemon returned from injury to play limited snaps last week.

How Miller Moss could get under 242.5 passing yards

Pass protection is a major concern for this USC offense with tackles Elijah Paige and Mason Murphy struggling to set the edge. Moss came into the Minnesota game as one of the most pressured and hit quarterbacks in FBS, and Penn State’s pass rush is producing a sack on 8.7% of opponent dropbacks. The Lions can shut down the run (they hold opponents to 2.5 yards per carry) and still cover the back end, as they’re holding opponents to just 233.4 total yards per game, the fourth-lowest mark in the nation.

Penn State also rarely allows explosive plays, so Moss might have to reach this total with a ton of short passes. The defense has held three Power Four opponents to just 171 passing yards per game this season. Additionally, Penn State’s offense could bleed the clock and control the action on the road.
