PA sports betting

Free bet giveaways from PA sports betting apps nearly doubled in August compared to the same month last year.

According to the latest state report, operators dished out $15.3 million in bonus bets last month, up from $8.6 million in August 2023.

The Pennsylvania sports betting bonuses follow July when promo spending also doubled from the same month the year before.

The offerings will most likely increase significantly in September with NFL betting. In September 2023, sports betting apps gave away $29.5 million in free play.

Who led PA sports betting bonuses?

FanDuel led all PA sports betting apps by giving away nearly $5.1 million in August bonus bets. The market-leading app is routinely the most generous regarding promo spending.

DraftKings passed out $3.5 million in August credits, while market newcomer bet365 gave away $2.5 million.

Fanatics, at $1.7 million, and BetMGM, at $1.1 million, were the only two others to offer more than $1 million in monthly promotions.

Handle and revenue leaders

FanDuel and DraftKings continued to claim the most market handle and revenue. FanDuel took in $175.3 million in August online bets, good for 38% of market volume.

DraftKings handled 27% with more than $123 million in bets. BetMGM and bet365 were the only other PA sports betting apps to earn at least a 6% volume share with $34.3 million and $28.1 million, respectively.

FanDuel and DraftKings combined for nearly three-quarters of market revenue, with $18.2 million in winnings for FanDuel and $11.1 million for DraftKings.

PA sports betting market trends

In all, $457.6 million was staked online in August. It was nearly 25% more than in August 2023, when bettors put down $367.2 million.

Market revenue jumped up in August as well. Online PA sportsbooks cleared $41 million in August, up from $27.9 million during the same month last year.

Including in-person betting, all Pennsylvania sportsbooks combined to send a $10.8 million tax payment back to the state.
