Bet365 reconsidered on Tuesday its decision to adjust payouts on wagers tied to 49ers running back Jordan Mason after Chrisitan McCaffrey was ruled out, following public blowback.

Mason’s rushing yards prop was moved by bet365 from 13.5 yards to 62.5 yards after McCaffrey was ruled out an hour before pregame NFL betting closed at kickoff Monday night. The sportsbook then alerted bettors who took Mason’s over at the original line that it would be significantly adjusting payouts, from -110 to -5000. Mason finished well over his line with 147 rushing yards against the Jets.

We are contacting you regarding bet ID [redacted] placed at the odds of -110 on Jordan Mason – Over 13.5 (Player Rushing Yards NY Jets @ SF 49ers). We have identified that this selection was placed at incorrect odds and as such, in accordance with our rules, will be settled at -5000.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Bet365 pays out Jordan Mason bets

Bet365 fined for recent adjustments in New Jersey

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement fined the operator $33,000 just weeks ago for adjusting wagers and accepting bets on prohibited events. That was three weeks after it paid out $519,323.32 on bets it revised odds on over the span of nearly three years.

Some US sports betting jurisdictions allow sportsbooks to adjust payouts if odds are “deemed in obvious error,” if they specify that in their house rules. New Jersey, however, requires approval from the state first.

In its July ruling, the DGE warned bet365 that further violations, no matter how small, would result in harsher penalties.

“No further such violations related to the unilateral voiding of wagers will be tolerated. In the event of any further such violations by bet365, the Division will take action to impose penalties warranted by the nature and extent of that conduct, and such imposition will reflect fully the prior course of violative conduct detailed herein. While the Division has agreed that it will not institute further regulatory action beyond this Action in Lieu of Complaint which resolves the outstanding amounts owed to and wrongfully withheld to date from patrons in all of the above-described matters, any matters, any additional violations of N.J.A.C. 13:69D-2.3 and N.J.A.C. 13:69N-1.9N-1.9(q), no matter how de minimis, will result in further disciplinary action by the Division.”

Software, trader errors to blame for past violations

Both bet365 and the New Jersey Attorney General’s office, which oversees the NJDGE, declined to comment on this story.

Bet365 blamed its past violations on software malfunctions and trader errors. In August, the company submitted a report to NJDGE outlining efforts to address internal software systems and manual trading processes.
