Breaking down Strickland vs Costa
Strickland has developed a reputation as something of a point fighter. He finds himself in a lot of close fights, with four of his last five fights going to the judges.
Of those, two ended in split-decision losses, including his last outing in which he lost the UFC middleweight title by the slimmest of margins. Strickland has an awkward defense that’s frustrating for many opponents, and he relies far more on output than power in his striking offense.
Costa is more of a slugger than a smooth striker. While his last three bouts ended in decisions, he’s gone the distance only four times in 17 fights. He’s not known for being particularly hard to hit, but his chin has held up under heavy fire in the past.
The only person to stop him inside the distance was former UFC middleweight champ Israel Adesanya. Of Costa’s 14 wins, 11 have come by KO/TKO — though he hasn’t finished a fight in the first round since 2017.
