Inter Miami began the Leagues Cup tournament as the worst team in the MLS, trailing all other squads in the standings with only 18 points and five wins through 22 games. The addition of Messi to the roster instantly improved the team’s outlook, and it has not lost since. Inter Miami beat Mexico’s Cruz Azul 2-1 in the first game of group play, then routed MLS side Atlanta United 4-0 to advance. Charlotte FC entered this tournament in the bottom half of the MLS Eastern Conference and won two of its first four games on penalty kicks.
