The US Women’s National Team played to a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in the second match of group play on Wednesday, leaving the two teams tied for the top spot in Group E with one match left in group play. If the US wins or draws with Portugal, the team will automatically qualify for the next round. But in order to have a chance of winning the group, the US likely needs to beat Portugal, since the Netherlands is a heavy favorite in its final group stage match against Vietnam.
If the US and the Netherlands both win their final group matches, then goal differential will determine the group winner. The US has a +2 advantage in that category, and is to win Group E and to win the entire tournament.
The good news is that the US should have the superior offensive firepower in this matchup and a deeper roster. That hasn’t led to the explosion of goals that many expected, especially from the younger players on the US roster. But this team does consistently create enough chances that capitalizing on even a few of them might be enough.
Portugal got its first Women’s World Cup victory in a 2-0 win over Vietnam on Thursday, which also brought the team’s first Women’s World Cup goals after a 1-0 loss against the Netherlands in the first group match. So far in this tournament, Portugal has looked like a tenacious team that’s still lacking in experience but doesn’t go away easily.
A win over the defending champion US team would send Portugal onto the knockout stage for the first time, which would be a major upset and a huge accomplishment in itself for a team that’s a underdog to advance out of Group E.
