The US Women’s National Team comes into this tournament as the favorite to win a third consecutive World Cup title. The squad enters this tournament missing some key players due to injuries, but that’s the case for all the top contenders. The US also has the advantage of great roster depth, with lots of young players to turn to in times of need. Trinity Rodman — daughter of retired NBA star Dennis Rodman — will be playing in her first World Cup at the age of 21, as will 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Veteran players like Alex Morgan, as well as Megan Rapinoe, who’s playing in her final World Cup, are expected to be top scoring threats. The US is likely to treat this match as a way of easing into the tournament, bringing some returning players in off the bench as they continue to adjust after injury.

Vietnam () is among the biggest underdogs to win this World Cup, and in many respects it has succeeded just by qualifying. This is the first World Cup appearance, men’s or women’s, for the country. Head coach Mai Đức Chung has led Vietnam to six gold medals in the South East Asian Games. The team qualified for this tournament by winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Playoff last year. This will be the first time these two teams have met in international competition, but Vietnam’s recent friendlies against New Zealand and Spain earlier this month resulted in lopsided shutout losses. Most players on the team play for clubs inside Vietnam, but forward Huynh Nhu made history last year as the first Vietnamese woman to sign with a top-flight European team.
