CONCACAF Gold Cup final match preview
Mexico came into this tournament as the favorite to win it all and has remained so throughout after winning its group, cruising to the finals without conceding a single goal in the knockout stage. In fact, El Tri has only given up two goals in the entirety of this tournament so far.
The last one came in the final match of group play, which was essentially a meaningless game for Mexico against a Qatar side that was fighting hard for a place in the quarterfinals. Mexico routed Jamaica 3-0 in the semifinals, scoring two goals in the first half. Henry Martin and Santiago Gimenez are constant scoring threats, and defensively the team has been strong all tournament.
Panama entered the semifinal round as the biggest underdog to win it all, but now finds itself one victory away from hoisting the cup. The team beat the American squad on U.S. soil, winning the semifinal match on penalties. It also dominated time of possession, though conceding late goals still seems to be a problem.
Panama has been to the finals before, but has never won a Gold Cup title. Breaking through the Mexican defense might be the big challenge here, as Panama has been shut out in four the last five matches against Mexico.
