CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match analysis
Saturday, July 8
Panama vs. Qatar
Panama got here by going undefeated to win Group C. It’s the nation’s best opening round performance in this tournament since 2013. The last time Panama made it to the quarterfinal round of the Gold Cup was 2019, and its last two trips to the final eight have ended in eliminations after close matches. Panama was eliminated from 2022 World Cup contention with a 5-1 loss to the US team during qualifying, but since then has not lost an international match in which the team has scored.
Qatar slipped into the quarterfinal round with a surprising 1-0 win over Mexico, plus the right mix of results elsewhere in the group. The team scored a single goal in all three of its group play matches, but all those goals came early on, with the team trying to hold on defensively in the second half. Qatar coach Carlos Queiroz’s teams have won all three international matches they’ve played against Panama, but he’ll be working with a diminished roster after the win over Mexico brought plenty of yellow cards for Qatar.

Mexico vs. Costa Rica
Mexico won Group B despite the 1-0 loss to Qatar in the final match of group play. A 4-0 win over Honduras set the tone in the first match, and Mexico went on to beat Haiti 3-1 to seal the group win. Mexico has made it to the quarterfinals of every Gold Cup tournament thus far, and the team hasn’t lost a quarterfinal match in this tournament since 2005.
Costa Rica’s lone win in group play came in a high-scoring affair against Martinique. Costa Rica has not fared well against Mexico in the past — it’s been almost a decade since the team has beaten El Tri in any competition, and it has never done so in the Gold Cup. In the last four meetings between the two squads, Costa Rica has not scored a single goal.

Guatemala vs. Jamaica
Guatemala won Group D, defeating Cuba and Guadeloupe while playing to a draw against Canada. Defense was the main focus, as the team didn’t concede its first goal of the tournament until the final group stage match. This is the first meeting between these teams in any competition since 2012. Guatemala won that game, 2-1.
Jamaica was an offensive powerhouse in group play, scoring 10 goals through three matches. The team has also given up at least one goal in five of its last six matches, and it finished second in Group A behind the US team. Jamaica has typically been strong in the Gold Cup, making it as far as the finals twice, most recently in 2017.

USA vs. Canada
The US team is on a roll of late, going unbeaten in its last nine matches. This squad got a big confidence boost when it won the CONCACAF Nations League just last month, defeating Mexico in the semifinal before dispatching Canada 2-0 in the final. The US outscored opponents 13-1 in group play to finish at the top of Group A, but the competition will get much tougher now in the knockout stage.
Canada surprised many people by qualifying for the World Cup in 2022, though the team didn’t make it out of the group stage there. Since then, Canada has lost only one match. Unfortunately, it was a 2-0 defeat against the US in the CONCACAF Nations League final in June.
