The Houston Cougars opened as an early favorite to win the 2023 national championship after winning 13 straight games leading up to the AAC Conference final on Sunday. The Cougars only lost two games in the entire regular season, the last of which came in an upset against Temple in late January.
The Alabama Crimson Tide won the regular season SEC title and then beat Texas A&M to win the SEC tournament on Sunday. They also were one of only two teams to defeat Houston during the regular season.
The Kansas Jayhawks are the defending national champions, having defeated North Carolina in the 2022 NCAA finals, and are among the favorites to win again. If they can pull that off, they’d be the first team since Florida in 2007-2008 to repeat as champions in consecutive years.
The Purdue Boilermakers won the regular season Big Ten title and played their way into the Big Ten tournament final game, opposite Penn State. They own regular season wins over Duke and Gonzaga.
The UCLA Bruins are the top team in the west, according to oddsmakers. They won the Pac-12 regular season title, but lost to the Arizona Wildcats in the conference tournament final.
