Is Online Lottery Legal in Washington?

While the lottery itself is fully legal in Washington, players cannot purchase Washington Lottery tickets online. Tickets must be bought in person from authorized retailers, as the state does not currently offer an official iLottery platform.

The Washington State Lottery offers several draw games, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto, Hit 5, Match 4, Pick 3, Cash Pop, and Keno, along with a wide variety of scratch tickets available at authorized retailers. Powerball and Mega Millions are multi-state games played across more than 45 U.S. jurisdictions, with drawings held multiple times each week.

The Washington Lottery is a state-run program, and revenue from ticket sales is distributed across several funding categories that support winners, education, retailers, and state programs.

The Washington Opportunity Pathways Account (WOPA) supports education initiatives such as college financial aid, early learning programs, career training, and other workforce development programs across the state.

Washington Lottery Courier Services

Lottery courier services like Jackpocket and Jackpot.com allow players in some states to order lottery tickets online while the service purchases the physical ticket from a licensed retailer. However, these courier services are not currently available for Washington Lottery games. As a result, players must buy Washington Lottery tickets in person from authorized retailers rather than through third-party apps or online services.

Washington Lottery Eligibility Requirements

To participate in the Washington State Lottery, the player must be at least 18 years old. There’s no online lottery play in the state, so players must go to retailers in person to purchase tickets and have a physical ID ready to present at the outlet. 

The player must also have their ID ready when claiming prizes. 

There are some restrictions on who can and can’t purchase lottery tickets, though. These include Washington Lottery commission members and employees, as well as household family members. Additionally, auditors, accounting firms, and government employees are also prohibited.

How to play Washington Online Lottery

Online lottery ticket sales are prohibited in Washington. Instead, players will need to go to a retailer to purchase their tickets. That said, there is a mobile app, Washington’s Lottery, available for download to check winning numbers and scan tickets. 

Washington Lottery Games 

Below, I’ll provide sections covering each type of game that can be played at the Washington State Lottery. 

Powerball

With Powerball, players select five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26.

To win the jackpot, you must have all six numbers correct. However, you can win prizes for other combinations, too. 

Also, for an extra $1 per game, you can win even more money on non-jackpot winning combinations. This feature is known as Power Play. There’s also Double Play, which is an additional $1. This is a game in which a second set of winning numbers is drawn, but with different prize tiers.

Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 7:59 p.m. local time in Washington.

Mega Millions

To start with Mega Millions, each ticket starts at $2 with an optional Megaplier for $1 extra. Players will select five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega Ball number from 1 to 24. A randomly generated 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x multiplier will then be applied to your ticket. The jackpot starts at $50 million and grows until someone matches all six numbers. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 8 p.m. local time in Washington. 

LOTTO 

To play LOTTO, you’ll spend $1 for per play. You’ll then receive six numbers between 1 and 52. The Jackpots begin at $1 million and continue until all six numbers are matched. 

Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. local time in Washington. 

Hit 5

With Hit 5, players will spend $1 and pick five numbers between 1 and 42. The Cashpot starts at $100,000 and rises until all five numbers are chosen.  Drawings are held every night at 8 p.m. local time in Washington. 

Match 4 

Match 4 costs $2 per play, and players will pick four numbers between 1 and 24. The prize for all four numbers correct is $10,000; if there are multiple winners, the prize is split among them.

Pick 3

With Pick 3, there are multiple play types with different costs. However, the goal is the same: pick three numbers between 0 and 9. From there, you’ll win the prize associated with the specific game.

Cash POP

With Cash POP, each number is considered a POP and costs $5. You can play 15 POPs per ticket, for a maximum of $75. When you play all 15, you’re guaranteed to win something. One number is drawn, and prizes can vary from $25 to $500.

Keno

With Keno, you’ll select a play amount of $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $10, or $20. Then, players will select a number between 1 and 80 based on the spot they choose. This can range from 1 to 10 spots. So, if you were to pick a 4-spot, you’d select four numbers. There are different odds for each type. 

Washington Keno drawings occur every few minutes throughout the day.

Scratch Tickets

In Washington, players can purchase numerous scratch tickets priced at $1, $2, $3, $5, $10, $20, and $30. 

How To Sign Up for the Washington Lottery 

You cannot sign up for the Washington Lottery online as ticket sales are prohibited. There is a mobile app you can download, Washington’s Lottery, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. With this app, you can check winning numbers and scan tickets to earn points with the rewards program. 

Washington Lottery Deposits, Withdrawals, and Claiming Winnings 

Deposits & Payment Methods

Since there are no online lottery sales in Washington, players must go in person to a retailer. Tickets can be purchased with a cash or other retailer-accepted payment methods. Credit cards are not allowed. 

How Winnings Are Paid

For smaller winnings of $600 or less, you can typically redeem this right from an authorized lottery retailer. For larger prizes, $601 or more, you can claim these at a Lottery office. If the prize is $100,000 or more, you must call a Lottery office to receive more information and set an appointment to make a claim. 

Claiming Large Prizes & Jackpots

If you were to win a large amount of money from Powerball or Mega Millions, you’d start by calling the Lottery office to set an appointment. From there, you have 180 days from the time of the drawing to claim the prize, or the funds are returned to state lottery programs. 

Jackpot prizes can be paid out in a lump sum or as an annuity, paid over multiple years. 

How to Claim Washington Lottery Prizes

The best way to understand claiming Washington Lottery prizes is to break it into three categories: $600 or less, $601 or more, and $100,000 or more. 

Regardless of the winnings, though, you have 180 days to claim your winnings. 

Taxes on Lottery Winnings in Washington

Yes, Washington State Lottery winnings are taxable income at the federal level. However, Washington has no state income tax.

Washington Lottery App Review

There is an app for Washington State Lottery (Washington’s Lottery), but you cannot make any purchases. 

That said, the app functions well for what it’s designed to do: show current jackpots, drawing dates, and winning numbers; show scratch cards; scan tickets; and access the My Lottery 360 portal. 

There’s a menu along the bottom of the app with links to the scratch tickets page, the scanner, the rewards program, and a menu to find lottery retailers, and get additional help. 

There’s not much to this app, but it accomplishes its goal perfectly. 

Washington Online Lottery vs. Online Casinos

There is no Washington State Lottery online. There are also no online casinos available in Washington. 

Generally speaking, the state lottery is operated by the Washington State government, while casinos in the state operate under different regulatory frameworks. In Washington, most retail casinos are owned and operated by federally recognized Native American tribes and run under tribal gaming agreements with the state.

As far as games go, lottery games allow players to select numbers and wait for a drawing, whereas casinos offer slots and table games such as baccarat, blackjack, roulette, and more. 

There are distinct differences in payouts. With a lottery, payouts tend to be higher, but the odds of winning are much lower. At a casino, you’ll have more frequent wins, but smaller overall. Both are completely random, though. 

The main differences between the two are the ownership structures, type, payout structures, and legality. 

One thing is similar, though: There are no online iterations of either in Washington. 

Washington Lottery vs. Sweepstakes Casinos

Sweepstakes casinos are platforms where players will have two currencies, Gold Coins and Sweepstakes Coins, and play casino-like games, including slots and table games, depending on the platform. 

Gold Coins are played “for fun” and have no redeemable value, whereas Sweepstakes Coins do. 

These are different from real-money online casinos in that they operate under sweepstakes rules, and you don’t need to spend any money to play at them. 

While it is not explicitly legal in Washington, sweepstakes casinos choose not to operate due to the state’s strict gambling laws.

Washington Lottery History 

The Washington State Lottery was formed in November 1982. The bill was signed into law on July 16, 1982 by Governor John Spellman. The bill came during a time of recession in the state and across the country, and the lottery was used to generate funds for education and the State General Fund.
