Chargers Odds Falling Following Justin Herbert Ankle Injury

While there weren’t an overwhelming amount of injuries across the NFL in Week 3, some stunning results and notable trends have led to early line movement after Sunday. Here is a look at some of the biggest shifts on point spreads from NFL Week 4 lookahead lines to the opening numbers for the week.

Justin Herbert suffers apparent ankle sprain

The Los Angeles Chargers suffered their first loss of the season and might have lost Justin Herbert for multiple weeks. Linebacker Derwin James told media members that Herbert was already playing at less than 50% health due to foot and ankle issues before the quarterback got rolled up on in the third quarter and had to exit the game against Pittsburgh.

With Herbert set to potentially miss multiple games, Taylor Heinicke would start for Jim Harbaugh’s new squad. Stud offensive guard Rashawn Slater (pectoral) also had to exit the game, and he missed most of the 2022 season with a torn biceps injury.

Following the loss and those injuries, the Chargers have shifted from +4000 to +6000 in Super Bowl odds and moved from around +400 to +900 to win the AFC West. Their line for total regular season wins has dipped from 9.5 to 8.5.

The spread has moved considerably ahead of the Chargers’ Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bolts were four-point underdogs ahead of Week 3 action and are now getting 8.5 points at DraftKings Sportsbook with Heinicke likely to start at SoFi Stadium.
