What happened to Betfred Sportsbook?
Betfred entered the US in early 2020, opening its first retail sportsbook at Grand Falls Casino in Larchwood, Iowa, shortly before Super Bowl LIV. It went on to launch online and retail operations in several states through partnerships with casinos, tribal operators and sports teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals in Ohio.
The brand struggled to win meaningful market share against larger competitors, though, and began pulling back in 2024. Here’s how the exit played out:
- 2024 into early 2025: Betfred closed its operations in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia and Washington.
- January 2025: It ended its retail operation in Nevada, leaving Pennsylvania as its only remaining US market.
- July 31, 2025: Betfred shut down its Pennsylvania app, which it ran in partnership with Wind Creek Bethlehem, completing its exit from US online sports betting.

What if I had a Betfred account?
Before closing in Pennsylvania, Betfred let customers settle open bets and use early cash-out through the end of July 2025, and it said wagers that settled after shutdown would be paid by mailed check. If you believe you’re still owed funds from a former Betfred account, contact Betfred’s customer support directly. You can also reach out to the gaming regulator in the state where your account was registered.
Is Betfred still operating anywhere?
Yes, outside the US. Founded in England in 1967, Betfred remains one of the UK’s largest bookmakers, with a large network of betting shops and an online platform. Its US exit doesn’t affect its UK business, but US bettors can’t use the UK site.
