Alberta online casinos and sportsbooks will generate around C$76 million in proceeds from the first year of regulated iGaming in the province.

That is according to Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally, who shared those expectations with the Edmonton Journal.

Sportsbooks and online casinos in Alberta will pay a 20% tax on all net gaming revenue after paying 3% of gross gaming revenue off the top for First Nations and social responsibility funding.

If all of that $76 million is from gaming revenue and not initial fees, that would imply $390 million in legal Alberta gaming revenue in year one.

How does Alberta forecast compare?

At $390 million in revenue, Nally expects the regulated market to grow more than 40% over its latest reported figures.

PlayAlberta, the province’s only legal way to gamble online until the regulated industry launches next month, generated $275 million in net sales in fiscal 2024-25, which ended March 31, 2025.

It is estimated that PlayAlberta captured 23% to 32% of the total iGaming market in Alberta.

Regulating Alberta online casinos not about dollars

Nally previously told the Edmonton Journal that he would “push that button” if one existed to shut down online gambling, but it does not.

“We know that gambling will never be safe, it will never be responsible,” Nally told the outlet this week. “But there are ways to make it a little safer, and there are ways to make it a little more responsible. … We can’t turn off the internet.”

Nally also noted the change in the market means operators will be paying for treatment for the first time with 1% of gross revenue going to problem gambling treatments. That is “the right thing,” he said.

Only one new operator in update

There was only one new gaming operator added in the latest update to the list of regulated companies ready to launch on July 13.

CasinoDays from Golden Nebula Limited is the latest brand on the list, making it 51 different online casino and sports betting brands that are approved to go live on day one. The brand is also live in Ontario‘s regulated market.
