In its first year of sports betting, Louisiana has not seen many new sportsbooks, but that is set to change in early 2023.
Betway expects to launch mobile LA sports betting in the first quarter of 2023, according to the company’s recent Q3 earnings call. The company will also launch Ohio sports betting in Q1 2023.
Betway is live in seven US states, with access to another 12 states. It will be the ninth mobile sportsbook in Louisiana.
While the earnings presentation said “Super Group intends to expand only into states that will provide opportunities for long-term growth and profitability,” Betway has yet to secure significant sports betting market share in any state where it operates.
Louisiana sportsbooks grow
Louisiana sports betting launched with retail sportsbooks Oct. 31, 2021. Online LA sports betting went live in late Janaury 2022 with six mobile operators:
- Barstool Sportsbook
- BetRivers Sportsbook
- BetMGM
- Caesars Sportsbook
- DraftKings Sportsbook
- FanDuel Sportsbook
There are eight operators live in the Bayou State since WynnBet launched in February and PointsBet joined in September. There are up to 40 online skins available in Louisiana.
Regulators have issued 17 of 20 sports betting licenses to casinos in the state. Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chair Ronnie Johns told LSR the operators are keeping online partnerships very selective.
Record October for Louisiana sports betting
Louisiana sportsbooks took $255.5 million in bets during October, according to a state report released last week. That beat the previous handle record of $238.4 million set in February.
The record month came after Johns told LSR he expected a big jump in handle during the first NFL betting season with mobile betting.
Since the launch last year, Bayou State bettors have wagered nearly $1.8 billion during the first full year of action. The sportsbooks generated nearly $190 million in sports betting revenue.
