LeBron James‘ decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday triggered one of the fastest repricings ever on prediction markets, as over $273 million worth of contracts scrambled to adjust only after the news became public.

One minute before ESPN’s Shams Charania reported at 11:30 a.m. ET that James would sign a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, Philadelphia traded at just 8.9 cents on Kalshi, implying roughly a 9% chance of landing the four-time NBA champion. Miami remained the clear favorite at 44.7 cents, or 45% implied odds.

Within minutes of Charania’s report, Philadelphia surged from 9 cents to 59 cents and then 99 cents, while Miami collapsed from 45 cents to 1 cent as traders rushed to reprice the outcome.

Despite generating more trading volume than any basketball game, the market was caught completely off guard, offering a rare real-world test of prediction markets’ ability to aggregate information without insider trading.

Prediction markets lose to the news

Minute-by-minute trading data suggests traders had no advance read on James’ decision, a rare outcome for prediction markets that market themselves as a real-time alternative to traditional news media.

Several recent high-profile political and government-related prediction markets have seen sharp pre-announcement trading, prompting insider trading probes. This market remained stagnant until after the news broke, suggesting anyone holding insider information abstained from trading any significant amount on the outcome.

As James’ agent Rich Paul said earlier this week on his podcast: “None of these people know anything.”

YouTube mishap fuels Miami rally

Traders who bought Philadelphia contracts near 1 cent when the market opened would have realized a roughly 9,900% return before transaction costs. Even traders who purchased Philadelphia as recently as July 1 would have earned the same return, as the 76ers were still trading at 1 cent.

Cleveland spent nearly the entire spring as the favorite to land James before exchanging the top spot with Golden State throughout June. On July 1, Golden State’s implied probability reached 47% on Kalshi and then earlier this week, the money started pouring in on Miami.

That rally followed an unusual episode on Tuesday, when a scheduled YouTube livestream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026” briefly appeared on the Heat’s official channel. The Heat’s implied probability jumped from roughly 37% to 49% following reports of the posting.

Within hours, a Heat spokesperson told ESPN and the Miami Herald the livestream had been published accidentally while the team’s digital staff prepared placeholder assets in the event James signed with Miami. The following day, the organization dismissed members of its social media team and posted a job listing for the position.

That did little to reverse public belief, however, as Miami remained the overwhelming favorite to land LeBron up until one minute after Charania’s report.

Betting on LeBron’s decision continues

Even after the outcome became public, trading continued because the market had not officially resolved on Kalshi or Polymarket.

Rather than speculating on the outcome, much of the post-announcement activity appears to consist of traders unwinding existing positions, selling for 1 cent instead of waiting for those positions to settle worthless. Meanwhile, a separate market on when James would announce his decision resolved 35 minutes after Charania named Philadelphia as the landing spot.

The larger market on which team James will join remains open as of Friday afternoon pending official resolution under Kalshi and Polymarket rules. It ranks as Kalshi’s 10th-largest market ever.
