There is legal mobile sports betting in Louisiana, but it is not statewide after some areas voted against bringing betting into their backyards.
The nine parishes, or counties, that did not approve mobile sports betting would get another chance to allow sports betting under HB 72. The bill was assigned to the House Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice.
Sports betting in Louisiana launched in January 2022 after 55 out of 64 parishes approved it at the ballots in 2020.
Other gambling votes allowed, too
The bill would authorize parishes to re-vote on forms of gambling they previously voted against:
“Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the governing authority of each parish in the state is hereby authorized to call and conduct an election on a proposition to allow the operation of any form of gaming previously approved by the legislature which was not allowed in that parish on January 1, 2026.”
Along with sports betting, parishes could hold votes on riverboat casinos, horse racing and video poker. The measures require a simple majority to pass.
Daily fantasy sports are also legal at parish level, with 17 parishes declining to legalize DFS. Daily fantasy is not included as an option for re-voting.
Louisiana sports betting gets win in MS
Louisiana will continue to benefit from mobile sports betting dollars leaving Mississippi as the state failed to legalize online sports betting again.
HB 519 died in committee on Tuesday. This marks a step back for online sports betting in Mississippi as sports betting legislation passed the House in both 2025 and 2024.
This year’s attempt allowed just one online license per land-based casino compared to two in the past.
Mississippi launched legal sports betting in August 2018, just a few months after the end of PASPA in May 2018 allowed states to decide on the legality of sports betting.
