One of the most active online casino regulators just made its most aggressive crackdown yet.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced “its most sweeping enforcement action” last week. It sent 19 cease-and-desist letters to illegal online casino and sports betting companies.

The sites have 14 days to cease operation before the regulator pursues further legal action.

“Illegal gambling operators threaten the safety of our citizens and the integrity of our gaming industry,” MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said in the release. “When companies offer games without proper licensing, Michigan players are left without the critical protections they deserve. That’s unacceptable, and we’re taking strong action to stop it.”

Online casino crackdown wave

The MGCB sent the cease-and-desist letters to the sites for violating at least three Michigan laws: the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, the Lawful Sports Betting Act and the Michigan Penal Code.

“These platforms operate in the shadows,” Williams said. “They’re not just skirting the rules—they’re exposing players to serious harm. Our job is to stop them, and we take that responsibility seriously.”

The 19 sites included in the recent wave:

  • Bingo Village
  • BitBet
  • Cafe Casino
  • Cocoa Casino
  • Cyber Bingo
  • Davinci’s Gold

Active regulator against illegal gambling

Prior to last week’s wave, the MGCB was already one of the most active regulators in shutting down the illegal, unregulated market. It had sent more than 40 cease-and-desist letters in the past year.

It kicked off a large wave against Bovada, perhaps the most notorious offshore sportsbook, last spring. The MGCB has also looked into prediction markets.

Williams also led a group of regulators in asking the federal government for help on the illegal market in 2023.
