Super Bowl 59

The most important factor in any NFL game is the play of each team’s quarterback. When it comes to Super Bowl betting, this is highlighted even further, as that is where quarterbacks’ legacies are cemented for good or for bad. This is the second time Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes will face off in a Super Bowl.

In the first matchup, in 2023, Hurts had significantly better stats than Mahomes. Hurts had 304 yards passing and a touchdown, with another 70 rushing and three touchdowns. For Mahomes, he only had 182 yards passing with three touchdowns and 44 yards rushing. The key, though, was Mahomes coming up with the big clutch plays when it mattered.

Hurts is an impressive athlete and, in many ways, has better physical attributes than Mahomes. However, what Hurts does not have, or has yet to develop, is Mahomes’ clutch ability. In fact, no one may have that, as Mahomes has proven that — maybe more than any other player in NFL history — in the big moments, he almost always comes through.

Since 2001, there have been 125 drives with a team trailing with under one minute in the fourth quarter. Only 40% of the time has the trailing team ended up winning. Tom Brady was successful in five of 11 such moments. Drew Brees came through three of six times. Only one quarterback has been perfect, Patrick Mahomes, who is seven for seven.
